Electric Car Proposed to Replace NYC’s Horse-Drawn Carriages

Many of the millions of tourists who visit New York City every year take a horse-drawn carriage ride in Central Park as part of their experience. But a coalition called New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, Safe Streets wants them outlawed, claiming they are cruel to the horses, and new Mayor Bill de Blasio agrees with them. ElectricCarsNYCLASS would replace the iconic horse-drawn carriages with what they’re calling the Horseless eCarriage, an electric vehicle that was unveiled yesterday (April 17th) at the New York Auto Show. Designed on commission for NYCLASS, the large, antique-looking vehicles can travel 100 miles on a charge with a top speed of 30 miles per hour, but designer Jason Wenig says they’d have software that would limit their speed to five miles an hour in Central Park. This is all far from a done deal, however, since there is opposition to removing the horse-drawn carriages, not least from the drivers themselves, who say the city already regulates the horses to ensure their well-being. Additionally, the conservancy that runs Central Park told the New York Daily News that it’s against letting more vehicles of any kind into the park.
