EXPLOSION AT ARIANA GRANDE CONCERT KILLS 22, INJURES DOZENS – (05/23/2017)

There were 22 people killed, including children, and 59 injured last night (May 22nd) in an apparent suicide bombing at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. The attacker was killed, and although there were reports police had identified him, they weren’t providing any information about who he was, and are investigating to see if he had accomplices. The explosion took place around 10:30 p.m. just after the concert ended, with the Manchester Arena saying it happened outside the venue as people were leaving. Reports said injuries indicated the bomb had been packed with nails. Cellphone video from inside the arena showed panicked concert-goers, many of them children and teenagers, trying to get out.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, however supporters of the Islamic State (ISIS) were celebrating online. Prime Minister Theresa May said police were treating the explosion as a, quote, “appalling terrorist attack,” and Home Secretary Amber Rudd called it “a barbaric attack, deliberately targeting some of the most vulnerable in our society — young people and children out at a pop concert.” If confirmed as a terrorist attack, it would be the deadliest in Britain since July 2005, when 52 people were killed in suicide bombings on three subway trains and a bus in London.

President Trump was among the world leaders condemning the attack. Speaking Tuesday morning at a news conference in Bethlehem while on his nine-day foreign tour, Trump said the victims were, quote, “murdered by evil losers in life” whose ideology must be “obliterated.” He stated, “We stand in absolute solidarity with the people of the United Kingdom.”

  • Ariana Grande wasn’t injured. The 23-year-old singer tweeted later: “Broken. From the bottom of my heart, I am so so sorry. I don’t have words.”
