Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself on Wednesday night (May 17th), according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. The official report indicated that the 52-year-old singer died as a result of “suicide by hanging.” The Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News both reported that Cornell was found dead in a hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel with “a band around his neck.” These reports have not yet been corroborated by official sources. A full autopsy report, including toxicology results, has not yet been completed.

Cornell was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor in his hotel room by a family friend who has been asked to check on him by Cornell’s wife Vicky. He performed a concert with Soundgarden at the Fox Theatre in Detroit earlier that night and reportedly appeared to be in good spirits to those in attendance.

  • A spokesperson for the band called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said Cornell’s wife and family were shocked by it.
  • According to TMZ, sources who spoke with Vicky Cornell on Thursday (May 18th) said that she spoke with her husband before Wednesday night’s show and then again after the concert. She was reportedly adamant that Chris “was not in any way, shape or form in a suicidal state . . . there were no signs he was at all depressed.”
  • The Cornells had two children, 12-year-old Toni and 11-year-old Christopher, while Chris also had a 16-year-old daughter, Lillian Jean, from his first marriage to former Soundgarden manager Susan Silver.
  • Soundgarden was in the midst of a month-long North American tour and was set to headline Columbus, Ohio’s Rock On The Range festival on Friday (May 19th). The event’s organizers said in a statement, “We are devastated to hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell last night. He was a true hero to music. The voice of a generation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the entire music community. The voice of an angel, now watching down on us as we celebrate and honor him all weekend long.”

Selena Gomez has dropped her latest single “Bad Liar” and fans are busily attempting to decode the inspiration for the track.

“I was walking down the street the other day trying to distract myself,” she begins.  “But then I see your face — oh wait, that’s someone else.”

  • The beat picks up and she continues:  “What could possibly happen next? / Can we focus on the love? / Paint my kiss across your chest / Be the art, I’ll be the brush.”
  • The stripped down, lighthearted song samples The Talking Heads’ 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” and was co-written by Gomez, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. (They were also behind “Good for You” and “Hands to Myself,” from her second studio album, Revival.
  • When Gomez started teasing the song last week, most fans assumed it was written about ex Justin Bieber. Now that it’s out and the sweet lyrics are revealed, the speculation has turned to her current flame, The Weeknd.
  • No matter who it’s about, fans are digging it.

Katy Perry’s fans are eating up her food-themed “Bon Appetit” video. In fact, she broke her own record for the most YouTube views in 24 hours.

The video, featuring Perry being prepped as a meal, was a departure from her usually lighter, sexier fare.

  • In the first day of release, the video was peeped 16.8 million times, topping the record she set with “Roar.” It also broke other records: the most channel views in one day (25 million on May 13th) and the highest number of playlist adds in one day (84,000 on May 12th).

Katy Perry’s 2008 hit “I Kissed a Girl” raised many a brow in its time, and the song is back in the spotlight again, thanks to Miley Cyrus.

The pop phenom has been making the press rounds promoting her new single “Malibu” and in an interview with WKTU she claimed she was the inspiration for the hit.

  • “When she came out with ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ I was doing the Hannah Montana movie, and I heard her on the radio, they said, ‘Who’d you write that about?’ And she said me.”
  • Though Cyrus was just 15 when the song came out, she said she was delighted that she inspired the song. But Perry has claimed other inspirations for the song, including Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman.
  • Meanwhile, it seems former frenemy Demi Lovato may be ready to buddy up with Cyrus again. The 24-year-old singer recently celebrated her five-year anniversary of sobriety and told The Hollywood Reporter that she is delighted Cyrus has also stopped using drugs and alcohol.
  • “I am really proud of Miley,” she said. “I think that it helps people to know that there are people in the spotlight that have challenges, that are faced with very stressful lives.”
