Frances McDormand won an Oscar for Best Actress, and then earned almost as much acclaim for her thank-you speech celebrating women. But post-victory, there was even more drama when someone mysteriously nabbed her statuette.

According to The New York Times, she “set [her Oscar] down and was chatting” when someone swiped her trophy.

  • Reporter Cara Buckley hopped on the case and shared a photo of the suspect whom a photag tracked down. “Security at the Governors Ball are looking for this guy, who grabbed Frances McDormand’s Oscar and ran out with it,” she tweeted in the early hours of Monday alongside a photo of the suspect. “Wolfgang Puck’s photographer stopped him, got the Oscar back, and the guy disappeared back into the ball. Apparently Frances has said to let him go.”
  • The statue was retrieved and returned. TMZ reports that Terry Bryant, 47, was arrested and booked on felony grand theft.
  • Bryant seems to have a history of this. His Instagram feed includes a picture of him holding a statuette. It’s captioned: “I proclaim it in Jesus’s name. My SAG Award.” And in another post, “2018 SAG Awards. Thank you Lord God for your many blessing and favor.”
  • He has also been pictured with an MTV popcorn trophy and an Oscar last year. He reportedly had a ticket to the Oscars.
  • Shortly after the incident, a rep for McDormand said, “Fran and Oscar are happily reunited and are enjoying an In-N-Out burger together.”

Ed Sheeran has lent his support to a fan with an incurable disease called Rett Syndrome. The “Shape of You” singer donated a guitar to raise funds for 11-year-old Melody Driscoll, whose illness has left her in chronic pain.

The girl’s family are currently embroiled in a legal battle for her right to pain medication, which hospital staff said could damage her liver. Ed met Melody when he agreed to spend time with her in the hospital two years ago. Since then, the legal trouble around her medication has increased strain on her family.

Melody’s parents say access to pain medication will help improve their daughter’s quality of life. “I’d rather Melody had one more year filled with happiness than five years of pain,” Melody’s mother Karina Driscoll said. “It’s only now we realize how few rights we have as parents but we won’t give up.”

Rett Syndrome affects a victim’s ability to speak, walk, eat and breathe easily, and is marked by “near constant repetitive hand movements while awake.” The Driscolls will raffle off Sheeran’s guitar to help offset their expenses.

Since the February 14th school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, teenage survivors of the attack have led the charge to pass gun reform legislation. The #NeverAgain movement has been spearheaded by students who experienced gun violence firsthand, and their March for Our Lives (scheduled for March 24th in Washington, DC) petition has gained celebrity supporters.

Last week, Harry Styles announced that he had signed the petition and urged his fans to do the same. Now Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey and others have spoken out in support of the petition. They join Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui, Paramore’s Hayley Williams and more among artists who have backed the movement.

“Help these kids and sign their petition now,” urged Bieber on Twitter.

“Please sign the petition in support of #MarchForOurLives,” Mariah wrote.

The petition calls for three specific gun reform measures: banning the sale of assault weapons, banning high-capacity magazines and closing the “gun show loophole.” Such loopholes currently allow buyers to circumvent background check laws by purchasing weapons at shows or online.
