The Year In Music

Miley Cyrus’ Growing Year

Miley Cyrus was certainly the most talked about pop artist this year — and she didn’t even come out with any new music. Between getting a new look, getting engaged and getting puppies — Miley tops the list.

TV/MOVIES: Miley started off the year strong as the first celebrity host to be doing the punking on the revamped series of Punk’d. She Punk’d her friend Khloe Kardashian. However, her movie debuts didn’t seem to do it for her fans. She dropped out of the Adam Sandler flick, Hotel Transylvania and her film with Demi Moore, LOL, only hit seven cities across the country for its release. Miley was supposed to have really struck gold when she starred in So Undercover, alongside Joshua Bowman and Jeremy Piven however, it went directly to video.

MILEY GETS ENGAGED: However, Miley’s most shocking moment was her engagement to Liam Hemsworth. The pair denied engagement rumors after Miley herself posted a picture of her left hand with a diamond ring on it to her Twitter page. Liam further denied engagement rumors when he told Ok! Magazine that he didn’t see himself getting married anytime soon. He said, “Marriage and kids are way in the future for me. I’m young. It’s not really on my mind at the moment – marriage, kids or anything.” However, at the end of May, Liam actually proposed to Miley with a 3.5-carat, Neil Lane Diamond ring. No wedding date has been set yet. Miley insists that she is only having one wedding and all her wedding fantasies will come true on that one day.

MILEY’S WEIGHT AND HAIR LOSS: Miley had to fight back after reports said she was trying really hard to get and stay thin. Miley said her weight loss was due to an increase in Pilates and a gluten and lactose allergy. Miley tweeted, “For everyone calling me anorexic I have a gluten and lactose allergy. It’s not about weight it’s about health. Gluten is crapppp anyway! everyone should try no gluten for a week! The change in your skin, physical and mental health is amazing! U won’t go back! I ate today at Easter lunch but all of it was healthy and even more fulfilling! Health is happiness!” Meanwhile, after Miley shocked fans with her new slim figure she continued to have people question her judgment when she died her hair blonde and chopped it all off.

MILEY’S MENAGERIE: Miley’s house was unfortunately flogged with intruders over the past year and one actually jumped the fence with scissors and said he wanted to meet her. But a welcome addition to Miley’s home was her dogs. Miley rescued two dogs, Happy and Mary Jane. They joined the other three pups Miley already had, Lila, Floyd and Ziggy.

MUSIC: Meanwhile Miley is focusing on her fourth album which is expected to be out in 2013. Miley promised a single in 2012, but didn’t release anything yet. She said, “I’m really proud of the album. It’s my favorite thing I’ve done, probably ever. It’s all really different.”

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Breakout Year

CARLY GETS FOUND: It wasn’t too long ago that Justin Bieber was discovered on YouTube, and now he is helping others — like Carly Rae Jepsen — make their dreams come true as well. Justin helped her get a deal with his manager, Scooter Brauns’ record label. When “Call Me Maybe,” took the number one spot on the iTunes chart. Bieber tweeted, “So i get up today and #BOYFRIEND is #2 on ITUNES chart in the UK!! Incredible! Who is #1?? My own artist @carlyraejepsen… hmmmm.”

CALL ME MAYBE: “Call Me Maybe” had the longest number-one run on the pop charts this year. “Call Me Maybe” was inspired by a real life romance — one that still exists today. The Canadian pop star said she never asked a guy out quite like she sings about in the song — but the track was influenced by real life. The line, “Before you came into my life I missed you so bad,” was written about the guy she’s dating now. Jepsen told Metro newspaper, “He was the missing piece to my happiness. And yeah, after that first hello, we called each other.” Fun fact, Jepsen, along with her best friend Tavish Crowe, originally wrote “Call Me Maybe” as a folk song — they ended up tapping another musician friend, Josh Ramsay, to “popify it.”

ACCOLADES: Carly Rae Jepsen was named Billboard’s Rising Star of 2012. Carly also performed on the premiere of the CW drama, 90210, as herself.

NUDE SCANDAL: With stardom comes naked picture rumors, and Carly had her fair share of them this year. She denied that both nude photos and a sex tape. The photos were reportedly a 21-year-old Internet model named Destiny Benedict — who reportedly gets naked a lot — and actually addressed the confusion on Twitter. She tweeted, “Being mistaken for Carly Rae… Anal maybe?” Carly Rae Jepsen also refuted rumors that a sex tape starring a brunette that bears some resemblance to her is in fact not her. She tweeted, “Crazy morning. Discovered that someone put up a sex tape claiming to be me. Ridiculous. Obviously not me.”

Justin Bieber Believes

LAWBREAKER: Justin Bieber didn’t have to deal with baby mama accusations in 2012 however, that didn’t stop him from getting into some legal trouble. Justin Bieber’s bodyguard reportedly got into an altercation with an aggressive photographer. Reportedly, the photographer refused to get out of the way of Justin’s car as it was leaving Los Angeles International Airport. According to Los Angeles Airport Police, the photographer was ultimately taken away by police. The photographer was reportedly taken to jail and booked for assault with a deadly weapon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t just Justin’s staff that got into it with the paps, Justin himself was reportedly named a suspect in the alleged battery of a paparazzo. Bieber and his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, were reportedly leaving a local mall when Justin and a paparazzo reportedly got into a physical altercation after the photographer reportedly blocked Justin’s car as he was trying to drive away. According to Gossip Cop, Bieber reportedly jumped out of the car and started a fight with the pap. Reportedly, the paparazzo called 911 while other photographers were taking pictures of Gomez trying to calm her boyfriend down while he was putting on a shoe that had fallen off during the alleged attack. Justin also almost caused a state of emergency in Oslo, Norway after fans overran the city to watch his free concert. Some fans can’t help but scream when they see Justin so it’s no surprise that the singer is being sued for $9.23 million because a concertgoer says that she suffered permanent hearing loss after attending a 2010 concert in Oregon. The woman claims she suffered both ringing of the ears and over-sensitivity to certain sound frequenceis when Justin was suspended over the audience and prompted different sections to cheer. Meanwhile, Justin’s manager, Scooter Braun isn’t buying it.

ARE THEY OR AREN’T THEY? Justin and Selena Gomez’s relationship wasn’t the most solid this year. There were several rumors that they split but then were spotted together again. A source said, “It’s not just over for Justin and Selena. Whatever happens they have a lot to talk about. They’re both being a bit cagey and stubborn, but they’re desperate to see one another. This isn’t new for them, they often have a tumultuous relationship. We all expect them to work it out.” Meanwhile, the Victoria’s Secret model who posted a picture of her and Justin shortly before rumors of Justin and Selena’s split — denied that she caused the couple to breakup. Barbara Palvin tweeted, “hey everyone. please calm down. he is all yours!! 🙂 please 🙂 last time im saying it. please calm down.there is nothing going on w him.i met him and did a pic w him. wouldnt u do the same?:) #friendship”

HIGH SCHOOL GRAD: Justin Bieber is a high school graduate. According to the U.K paper, The Daily Telegraph, Justin has completed his senior year. He said, “I just finished high school. I passed my test — I’m free! It was hard doing school and work every day. Graduating was something my mom really wanted me to do, so I had to do it for her. I mean, this kind of lifestyle has given me a different perspective on life. I’ve been able to travel the world. At school, usually you have to do a lot of writing and reading. I’m not really into that stuff. I like to be out there.”

SONGS FOR THE LADIES: Justin Bieber wrote his new single, “Boyfriend” for his girlfriend Selena Gomez. According to radio interviews, Justin confirmed that the song was written with Gomez in mind — and Selena loves it. He said, “She loves it. It is about her. It’s just about being honest with one another. You just have to be honest, that’s the first thing, because if you’re not honest then the relationship is just not a good relationship.” Meanwhile, Justin is pretty much the only one still talking about the woman who falsely claimed that he had impregnated her backstage after one of his concerts. Justin said, “I’m going to be talking about everything I’m going through. I’ve written a song about that whole situation with that girl who said she’s having my baby – Mariah Yeater. I’ve written about my mom, loads of things I’m going through.” Believe was released on June 19. Bieber’s single, “Boyfriend,” has reportedly become his first top 10 on the U.S. Billboard airplay chart for Pop Songs. Though Justin was really tearing at the heart strings with his songs, it was him who had a weak stomach at his shows. At a concert in Arizona, Bieber reportedly left the stage twice to vomit and even puked once on stage. He apologized and still managed to finish the concert. After the show Justin took to Twitter to let his fans know he was ok.

One Direction: Bringing Back The Boy Band

COMPARISIONS: One Direction is probably the group that gets the “most improved” award this year. They started off as the opening act for Big Time Rush and then eventually increased in popularity enough to be compared to the likes of the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It seemed that both One Direction and Paul McCartney weren’t so quick to draw the comparisons between the two groups. Sir Paul McCartney said, “So many bands, they all get called the next Beatles. It puts an awful lot of pressure on them to be the next Beatles. Oasis were the next Beatles once, if you remember. It’s pressure because suddenly you have got to live up to all the things that we did. It was a different time back then. So let’s just call One Direction the next terrific band.” However, Mick Jagger had no problem comparing the group that got discovered on The X Factor UK to his own band. Mick said, “I watched a concert of One Direction on the TV the other night, you know just to check [it] out. It reminded me very much of our early concerts, when we were pushed around among the audience and we would kind of float. [T]hey were like, floating above the audience, and they looked like, really distinctly uncomfortable. I remember feeling that same uncomfortable feeling of being pushed around in this very weird place about 50 years ago. It was a very funny moment, because it was very similar to the things we’ve been through.”

RECORDS: It is truly undeniable that since One Direction hit the scene, they have only gotten hotter. Their first album, Up All Night, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. They were the first British group to have their debut album enter the chart at number one. According to Nielsen SoundScan the group sold 176,000 albums. Their debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful” went certified double platinum. “What Makes You Beautiful” sold over 131,000 copies in the US in its first week. One Direction also celebrated reaching 12 million sales worldwide in under a year. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne were each presented with a special disc by Syco and Sony Music in the UK. Their second album, Take Me Home was released on November 13 and was the year’s third highest debuting album. Meanwhile, One Direction shattered Justin Bieber’s VEVO record when they released the official video for “Live While We’re Young.” One Direction racked up 8.34 million views after just one day on the web. After being on the Internet for a week the video was watched over 27 million times.

SWAG: One Direction fans were not left without this year, Niall Horan auctioned off his underwear. The group also designed One Direction Ugg boots as part of a new collection of One Direction surf wear. The clothing line will also include flip-flops and shorts. One Direction released a live tour DVD and another unofficial documentary DVD. The Only Way Is Up documented the boys’ journey from The X Factor to their present day massive success. One Direction also announced a 3D Movie. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theatres on August 30, 2013. If any of that wasn’t enough to keep fans satisfied, the group opened up a store in NYC. 1D World had One Direction merchandise as well as cardboard cut-outs/stand-ups and much more. Shoppers had a chance to snatch up goods during the holiday season.

LAWSUITS: With success comes money — and lots of people are looking to get their piece of the pie. One Direction had to deal with a lawsuit from a band in the US called One Direction. Luckily, the dispute was settled after the U.S. band agreed to change their name. According to Starpulse, the bands became involved in a legal battle over the fame of the name in 2010. The American group filed a trademark lawsuit against the UK group and their representatives — who hit back with a countersuit. The US group has now agreed to change their name to Uncharted Shores.

FANS: Fans love One Direction so much that they are willing to do anything for them — even attempt to break up their relationships. Liam Payne who is dating dancer, Danielle Peazer was upset when users tweeted negative comments to his girlfriend. He even took a break from Twitter and from his girlfriend, but fortunately Liam is back on Twitter and back with Danielle. Louis Tomlinson, got an unexpected visitor in Sweden one night– a naked stranger knocking at his door. According to UK’s Star, the man was actually looking for a bathroom. A source said, “Louis heard the noise because he wasn’t sleeping well with jet-lag and at first he thought it would be another fan who had sneaked past minders. When he saw it was a small naked man he called security, who sorted it out. This bloke wasn’t even a hotel guest, but a drunk who was looking for a toilet.”

Lady Gaga Was Born That Way

TELEVISION: Lady Gaga started 2012 off with a bang. She planted a kiss on New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg just after she helped him drop the ball in Times Square, NYC. Gaga then threw a New Year’s party at her father’s restaurant, Joanne, on the Upper West side in NYC. Unforutnately, Joanne Trattoria isn’t doing well, it’s gotten poor reviews. However, Gaga’s smooch with Bloomberg wasn’t her only TV appearance; she appeared on the season finale of The Simpsons. Gaga appeared as herself to boost the spirits of Lisa who became a social outcast. Gaga’s print advertisement for her first perfume, Fame, left little to the imagination. She appeared totally naked in black-and-white with tiny men crawling all over her body.

FANS: Lady Gaga was the first Twitter user to surpass the 25 million follower mark. Gaga tweeted, “#25milliontweetymonsters wow! I’m officially feeling like the luckiest girl in the world today.” Then Lady Gaga took over social media. She launched,, which serves as a social networking site between her and her fans. But fans got upset at Gaga when she tweeted, “Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay” Gaga’s statement surprised people since she has always been very open about her struggle with bulimia and at one point she actually encouraged girls to ditch their diets. In response to the tweet, the National Eating Disorder Association staff Twitter account wrote, “Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?” Lady Gaga made up for the joke by attempting to start a revolution on her Little Monsters website. She posted a picture of herself in a bra and underwear and claimed it as “Body Revolution 2013.” Perhaps one of Gaga’s greatest fan accomplishments was getting her own fern. According to the New York Times, botanists at Duke University have named a newly identified genus of fern GAGA. The fern is reportedly found in Arizona, Texas, Mexico and Central and South America and has fluid definitions of gender. Reportedly it reproduced by spores that can grow to be male, female or both. The sequence GAGA was found in the fern’s DNA base pairs.

BORN THIS WAY FOUNDATION: Born This Way had some ups and downs for Gaga. Her Born This Way Foundation was officially launched on February 29. Oprah Winfrey joined Gaga at the Harvard University event to kick off the foundation. But not all of it was positive — Gaga settled a $5 million lawsuit after being hit with allegations that she profited from the sale of charity wristbands she designed to raise money after the 2011 tragedy in Japan.

BORN THIS WAY BALL: Gaga’s Born This Way Ball seemed to be nothing but trouble. Lady Gaga’s show in Seoul, Korea on April 27 was only for an 18 and up crowd. According to Gossip Cop, South Korean authorities restricted fans under 18 years old from attending. Lady Gaga’s scheduled concert in Indonesia was canceled. Police refused to grant Gaga a permit to perform on June 3 in Indonesia’s capital of Jakarta. According to Radar Online, three Islamic groups demanded that the concert be stopped because of Gaga’s vulgarity. The Philippines weren’t too happy with Gaga’s arrival either. Reportedly, hundreds of Christians took to the streets in Manila, Philippines when Gaga arrived for her performance. According to Rolling Stone, the protesters were calling for the cancellation of the pop star’s concerts in the largely Roman Catholic country. Lady Gaga upset Thailand government officials after she tied the country’s flag to the back of a motorcycle as she rode on stage. During her May concert in Bangkok, Thailand’s Culture Ministry called the use of the flag while wearing a Thai headdress and bikini, “offensive” and “inappropriate” as well as disrespectful to the Thai people and has reportedly filed a formal police complaint over the matter.

AWARDS: Lady Gaga received two distinguished awards this year. Lady Gaga has taken her spot on Forbes 9th annual World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Gaga clocked in at the number fourteen spot. No other entertainment celebrities were a part of the top 20. Additionally, Lady Gaga was among the recipients of the Biennial LennonOno Grant For Peace honor, a peace prize in memory of John Lennon. According to the Associated Press, the pop star was honored for her work fighting for equality for gay, lesbian and transgender people.

ARTPOP: Lady Gaga announced that her upcoming album is titled, ARTPOP. Gaga will be releasing her new record in digital and actual form. The digital form will come as an interactive app filled with videos for each song on the album — as well as bonus music, games, magazines, chats, fashion updates and more. The app will be available in iPad, iPhone, mobile and computer compatible version. There is not set release date for ARTPOP. Lady Gaga conducted a Twitter interview with her fans and she revealed that she had already written around 50 songs for her upcoming album. In several tweets Gaga said, “i have written like 50 songs. i don’t know what will rise to top. but thats how i wrote the fame/the fame monster. i’ll release collabs regardless if they’re on album or not, thats whats nice about app. i can upload new material all the time. everyone needs to keep calm + trust mother. relinquish control of ARTPOP. erase your preconceived notions of my music.”

RELATIONSHIP: Lady Gaga ended things with her “Drunk Diet” boyfriend Luc Carl and started things with Chicago Fire star Taylor Kinney. Taylor was Gaga’s love interest in the music video for “You And I.” Though there were rumors of their breakup, the couple are still reportedly dating. The pair actually “got married” in one of Gaga’s elaborate music videos.

Katy Perry: Many New Suitors, No New Music

DIVORCE: Katy Perry and Russell Brand officially filed for divorce on December 31 2011, however their marriage actually ended on Monday, July 16, 2012. The couple filed for “irreconcilable differences” after 14 months of marriage. However, it seems that Katy is the one who walked away with the most out of the divorce. Katy and Russell worked out a custody agreement for the cat the couple adopted. Katy got full custody and Russell surrendered his interested in the house that he and Katy bought together while they were married. So Katy had rights to the $6.5 million estate. Russell also did not ask for any part of Katy’s earnings.

MEN: Katy might have been new on the market — but she didn’t take much time to get back in the game. She used her Grammy performance to debut a new song, “Part of Me.” Reportedly, she changed the words of the lyrics to reflect her split with Russell. One line originally read, “You can keep the dog from me, I never liked him anyway.” However, Katy reportedly change the lyrics to, “Keep your diamond ring/In fact, you can keep everything…Except for me.” But her Grammy performance wasn’t the only performance causing headlines. Katy reportedly stirred up some controversy in the Philippines when she pulled a local male model onstage for a kiss during her concert. According to a review in the Philippines version of Star, Katy scanned the crowd and told the men in the audience to take off their shirts if they wanted to come onstage. Katy eventually chose the hot bodied Ivan Dorschner, 21, who is a television host in the Phillipines. Katy also performed at the DirecTV pre-Super Bowl XLVI party and wasn’t shy about which players were her favorite. At the actual performance, Katy wore a half-Giants, half-Patriots jersey and dedicated her song, “Peacock” to Tim Tebow. Once Katy actually got back into dating she was on-again off-again with Florence and The Machine guitarist, Robert Ackroyd. Once they were officially off-again, Katy tried her luck with John Mayer. They two have an on-again off-again relationship, but thus far seem to be back on.

MUSIC: Katy didn’t have much new music this year. Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, featured several tracks that didn’t make the final cut for the original album. Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection album dropped on March 26. The album did include “Part of Me” which fans immediately thought she wrote about her divorce — but it was reportedly written well before that.

PRODUCTS: Katy Perry isn’t afraid to take fashion risks and this year she designed her own line of fake eyelashes. Perry teamed up with Eylure for the collection that featured four different options. Katy also went virtual in a Collector’s Edition of The Sims Showtime, that featured Perry. Lastly, Katy Perry officially got her own 3D movie. Katy told her fans the news over Twitter. Katy tweeted, “READY FOR HUGE NEWS?! FINALLY, my MOVIE is coming out with Paramount this summer! It’s called “KATY PERRY: PART OF ME” Presented In 3D! KATYCATS-LETS TREND #KP3D”

Madonna Isn’t Slowing Down

FEUDS: Madonna didn’t worry about the feuds she started and ended in 2012. Madonna and Elton John reportedly let their feud come to an end before Madonna dedicated a song to Elton in Nice, France. According to Perez Hilton, Madonna and Elton were eating at the same restaurant and made up then. A source said, “Elton goes to the Petite Maison for dinner fairly regularly as it’s near his villa in Mont Boron. But Madonna was also there for a bite before her show, which was down the road and didn’t start until around 10.30pm. Just as he was leaving, he went over to talk to Madonna and they were laughing and smiling. They even hugged each other.” However, Lady Gaga wasn’t let off the hook so easily. Madonna told the crowd at her concert that Gaga refused her offer to perform together. Madonna said, “I have the best fans in the whole world. So take that, Lady Gaga! You know, I invited her onstage to sing with me, but she turned me down. It’s OK. I’ve been rejected before. It’s good to build character.” Madonna also started and ended a feud with DJ DeadMau5 after making a reference to a song about Molly, but DeadMau5 misinterpreted her and thought she was talking about the drug.

TOUR: After several songs leaked off her latest album, MDNA — Madonna was looking for a traitor in her camp. However, there was never any confirmation that she may have found them. Madonna requested a very elite crowd at her concerts after proclaiming that fans should save their money for her tickets. She said, “Start saving your pennies now. People spend $300 on crazy things all the time, things like handbags. So work all year, scrape the money together, and come to my show. I’m worth it.” Meanwhile, Madonna created quite a bit of controversy throughout her MDNA tour. She used props like guns and political propaganda throughout her entire tour — even though she does not believe in violence. Madonna said, “I do not condone violence or the use of guns. Rather they are symbols of wanting to appear strong and wanting to find a way to stop feelings that I find hurtful or damaging. In my case I want to stop the lies and hypocrisy of the church, the intolerance of many narrow minded cultures and societies I have experienced throughout my life and in some cases the pain I have felt from having my heart broken.” But violence wasn’t the only thing people were talking about at Madonna’s shows — the singer wasn’t afraid to strip down whether it was to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims or just showing off her nipple to fans.

SUPER BOWL: Madonna kicked off her MDNA tour performing at the Super Bowl. She hit the stage with LMFAO, Nicki Minaj and MIA. The show set a new record on Twitter as the most tweeted about subject with 10,245 posts per second.

MALAWI: The piece of land where Madonna was going to build a school in Malawi is set to be turned into a cemetery for national heroes. According to, the plan to construct the academy for girls on the site was scratched after Madonna’s charity fell into crisis. Now it has been confirmed that the piece of land will be turned into a burial ground for important figures. A source said, “It was a cabinet decision to construct the heroes’ acre at this site… Malawians deemed to have done a heroic endeavor of national importance, and selected by committee, which will scrutinize whatever they did, will be buried there.”

Jessica Simpson Is A Baby Maker

BABY: Jessica Simpson gave birth to her and fiance, Eric Johnson’s first child. Maxwell Drew Johnson was born on May 1 and weighed 9 pounds and 13 ounces. Jessica was reportedly craving things from her childhood when she was pregnant with Maxwell. Jessica said, “I had a buttered Pop Tart this morning. I’m eating a lot of stuff that I ate in my childhood. Kraft Mac n’ Cheese, Pop Tarts, Cap’n Crunch. Everything’s filled with sugar. I’m like, ‘Yeah, I can do it. We’ll worry about the rest afterwards.'” Even after gaining over 50 pounds Jessica posed naked on the cover of Elle magazine. She explained that her bump was bigger than most because she had a lot of amniotic fluid. During Jessica’s pregnancy she was quite open with the process and had several interesting “Jessica-isms.” Jessica Simpson reportedly sold the first pictures of Maxwell Drew Johnson to People magazine for $800,000.

LOSING BABY WEIGHT: Jessica Simpson felt the pressure of tabloid rumors. The new mom signed on for a multi-million dollar deal with Weight Watchers to drop the excess baby poundage. However, since that time people have been speculating how long it’s going to take Jessica to get back into her Daisy Dukes. Jessica took to Twitter to set the record straight. She said, “Just so everyone knows…Weight Watchers hasn’t put ANY pressure on me! I’m trying to be as healthy as I can be for myself and I feel great!” Jessica has since lost a majority of the weight and though she refused to say how much she actually weighed, she admitted to losing over 40 pounds thus far.

DADDY ISSUES: Jessica Simpson’s father, Joe Simpson, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge on August 4th for allegedly driving under the influence. But that was just the start of problems for the Simpson clan. Jessica Simpson’s parents, Joe and Tina, put their Encino, California home up for sale for $4.3 million. According to Radar Online, the house has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. It reportedly spans 6,895 square feet in a gated community and sits on more than 1.5 acres. Jessica was then caught in the middle when her parents shockingly announced they were getting a divorce. Rumors began to circulate that Joe was divorcing Tina because he was gay. Jessica reportedly had no idea. A source said, “Jessica had absolutely no clue that her father was gay, not even the slightest inkling. She thinks she has very good gaydar, especially since a lot of her friends are gay, but she did not see this coming at all. It was a complete shock to the system, she feels terribly for her mom who was left reeling by the announcement and her sister Ashlee has also taken the news quite badly. Jessica’s been trying to process the information slowly, but she’s having difficulty dealing with it.”

BABY NUMBER TWO: Jessica Simpson has not started planning her wedding to Eric yet and the reason could be because Jessica is reportedly pregnant again. According to Us Weekly, a source said, “It definitely wasn’t planned. But yes, Jessica is pregnant again.” However, a rep for Jessica had no comment to Us Weekly. Gossip Cop also reached out for confirmation of the rumor however, no one is talking.

Justin Timberlake Is All Tied Down

ENGAGEMENT/MARRIAGE: After many days of are, they or aren’t they, Jessica Biel was spotted with a large, slightly rounded square-cut diamond ring on the right finger. However, it was Justin Timberlake’s grandmother that reportedly spilled the news first. She said, “Yes, Justin is engaged. Jessica is a very sweet girl, she’s upright and everything and we love her. She’s a wonderful campaigner for the environment and Justin is too, a fine young man. Jessica will be a lovely member of the family. They don’t know if the wedding will be in Memphis or Colorado, it’s all very new they haven’t made any plans yet. Justin, his mum and dad and Jessica have all been in Montana all Christmas and New Year, that’s when he proposed. Justin rang me himself on Christmas day to tell me about the engagement.” Justin left bachelor-hood in style, partying with his pals for his bachelor party before marrying Jessica Biel. Justin and his friends started the week of festivities in Las Vegas, where he hit up Surrender Nightclub at the Encore. Justin and his buddies were reportedly dressed in Rat Pack themed suits. The group then flew to Cabo, Mexico where they are reportedly took in some golf. Timberlake’s celebrations included 20 of his closest friends. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel officially got hitched in October. After tying the knot in southern Italy, the couple released a statement to People magazine. They said, “It’s great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends.” According to a local Italian newspaper, the couple wed in Puglia, Italy in front of 80 guests. They used powerful spotlights that were focused outward to discourage the paparazzi from taking photos. They even erected a special staircase next to the church that was located in the center of the Borgo Egnzaia resort to say “I do” before sunset, on Friday, October 19. Guests reportedly enjoyed appetizers of local delicacies. Guests reportedly included: Andy Samberg, Beverly Mitchell, Johnny Wright, Chris Kirkpatrick and Timbaland. Reportedly, Justin’s other N’Sync band members, Lance Bass and Joey Fatone were not in attendance because Justin did not want the wedding to be an N’Sync reunion.

MYSPACE: Justin Timberlake announced plans to revamp MySpace. Justin said, “We’re ready to take television and entertainment to the next step by upgrading it to the social networking experience. Why text or email your friends to talk about your favorite programs after they’ve aired when you could be sharing the experience with real-time interactivity from anywhere across the globe? As the plot of your favorite drama unfolds, the joke of your favorite SNL (Saturday Night Live) character plays, or even the last second shot of your favorite team swishes the net, we’re giving you the opportunity to connect your friends to your moments as they’re actually occurring. This is the evolution of one of our greatest inventions, the television. And, we no longer have to crowd around the same one to experience it together.” The social TV service will be available on Panasonic connected televisions. Justin took stake in MySpace for $35 million to help the company develop new strategies.

BASKETBALL: Justin Timberlake is slated to become a part-owner of the Memphis Grizzlies. According to E!, Justin and seven other investors have formed an ownership group led by technology entrepreneur Robert Pera. Pera reportedly made a deal with the current owner of the Grizzlies to purchase the team for $350 million. The NBA is reportedly reviewing the deal and must approve it.

FASHION: Justin was featured in a new ad campaign for Givenchy’s men’s fragrance, Play Sport. Justin has been associated with the designer since 2008 when the fragrance Play was first released. In one of the ads, J.T. is shown behind the wheel of a convertible with an ocean backdrop, while another shows the singer-turned-actor leaning against the convertible, holding the door open. Justin also got into home decoration. He designed for HomeMint, BeachMint’s latest celebrity collaboration. The site offers home decorating items for its subscribers who pay a monthly fee.

MOVIES: Justin Timberlake teamed up with Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams for a starring role in Trouble With The Curve. Timberlake is reportedly in talks to star in an upcoming dramatic romantic-comedy called, The Last Drop. The movie reportedly follows an alcoholic food critic who decides to change his life in order to win over the love of his life.

Selena Gomez Focuses On Film

ONSCREEN ROLES: Selena Gomez is headed back to Waverly Place. Selena announced that the Wizards of Waverly Place will come back for a special one-hour event. No exact date has been set but the special will most likely air on the Disney Channel in early 2013. Selena will not only star in the production but she will also be the Executive Producer. Selena Gomez admits that working on The Wizards of Waverly Place has given her a great appreciation of television sitcoms. Selena told, that she would love to get a role on primetime. She said, “Working on Wizards made me realize what an impact a weekly show can have on building support for you as an artist. I’d love to be part of another ensemble series, something contemporary and kooky and funny and a bit romantic. Like Friends was back when it started.” Selena and the Scene fans shouldn’t fret though — music is still her number one passion. She said, “I’d like to grow with my music. It’s really a passion of mine. I want to have fun with it and make my fans happy with what I sing. I love it and want it to be a part of my life forever.” Meanwhile, Selena is reportedly becoming part of Girl Rising with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. The film will be part of a 10×10 grassroots organization that works as a global action campaign piece for girls’ education. She also starred in Spring Breakers with Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco.

RELATIONSHIP: Selena Gomez is happy to be in a relationship that she doesn’t feel is a waste of time. Selena admitted to Cosmopolitan that with boyfriend, Justin Bieber — she is the happiest person she has ever been. However, she admits that her past relationships weren’t as fulfilling. Selena said, “I was in a relationship previously where I had to hide everything and it wasn’t my choice. I had to go through different exits and take separate cars and do the craziest things, and it just really wasn’t worth it. It was like a year of my life completely wasted.” Perhaps, it’s this love that makes Selena ok with Justin’s fans hating here. She said, “It’s a little odd, but I understand it completely. It’s amazing to me to see how many passionate fans there are. So obviously, you’ve just got to think of the fans first, and that’s OK.”

NO MORE SCENE: Selena Gomez took a break from her band to focus on films for a year. However, she recently announced that fans can expect a new album in 2013.

Britney Spears Still Has The X Factor

Britney Spears had a relatively positive year. Her and Jason Trawick got engaged and though there were constant rumors of wedding cancelations, no date has ever been formally set. Reportedly, Britney is waiting for her conservatorship to end. However, Britney’s fiance was granted a co-conservatorship of Britney’s affairs and actually helped her get the position at The X Factor judges table. Britney signed on to judge the X Factor for $15 million and says that she would be willing to judge for another year. In other positive Britney news, the court has dismissed Sam Lutfi’s lawsuit against Brit and her parents. The judge reportedly rejected the entire suit, which accused the Spears family of libel, breach of contract and battery.

Adele Takes A Break To Have A Baby

Adele was one busy lady this year. She returned to music after having to take months off for throat surgery and then not only pulled her own 007 move by getting a new boyfriend and having a baby with him — but she also sang the theme song for the latest James Bond film, Skyfall. Adele killed it at the Grammy Awards in February, performing for the first time since surgery and then swept the competition by taking home six awards, including Album of the Year for 21. This tied Adele with Beyonce for most Grammy awards won in one night by a female artist. However, that didn’t stop criticism — people like Chanel’s creative director, Karl Langerfeld, had to apologize to Adele after calling her “too fat.” Karl told Metro, that his comments were taken out of context. However, the thing that wasn’t considered is that Adele could actually be pregnant — which she was. She gave birth to a son, who is still unnamed and not yet debuted. Meanwhile, Adele’s 21 became the 21st album to sell more than 10 million copies since Nielsen Soundscan began keeping track in 1991. It reached 10 million in 92 weeks, which qualifies 21 for diamond status from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Christina’s Starts And Finishes

Christina Aguilera faced a lot of criticism about her weight this year, but that didn’t stop her from releasing her latest album, Lotus, in October. She also finished her last season on The Voice — but not without performing duets with the rest of the guys. Christina and Blake Shelton collaborated on a song on her album called “Just A Fool” and her and Cee Lo Green worked together on a song called “Make the World Move.” Christina told Us Magazine, that it will be hard to recreate the camaraderie she had with CeeLo, Blake and especially Adam Levine, who actually defended Christina’s weight, even though fans of the show thought that they hated each other.

  • She said, “When me and Adam are on breaks backstage, you know, we’re writing profanity with my red lipstick all over Blake’s trailer while he’s napping inside. It’s like we have definitely become like brother and sister. We goof around and play around. I’m going to miss it.”

Ke$ha Keeps On Trying To Create The Greatest Pop Record

Ke$ha turned 25 this year and celebrated by changing up her hairstyle. She also announced her new album, Warrior, would be released on December 4. The first single, “Die Young” was released on September 25 and was an instant hit. Ke$ha admitted that though she is on a constant mission to create the greatest pop record ever, her new album has more of a rock feel.

Entertainment News

Lindsay Lohan kicked off 2012 with a visit to her home from an uninvited guest. A man named Lonnie Short began knocking on her door and the police were called to arrest him. Lindsay also made a return to her hard-partying and clubbing. Though she opened up to Matt Lauer saying she was ready to put her bad habits behind her and focus on her career, it didn’t seem to last. Lindsay attended the White House Correspondents Dinner as a guest of Greta Van Susteren. In September, her mother had a difficult interview with Dr. Phil where many believed she appeared drunk and refused to answer questions directly. Meanwhile, Michael Lohan was revealed to have an illegitimate teenage daughter after taking a paternity test on a talk show. In October, a man was arrested for assaulting Lindsay in a hotel room after he tried to take a picture of her against her wishes. She also had a blowout fight with her mother Dina which led her to call her father to tell him that Dina had been using cocaine. Michael recorded and leaked the phone call to the press which forced Lindsay to come forward and say she was lying. Her father later showed up at her L.A home to stage an intervention and try to get a conservatorship over her. Lindsay’s publicist also quit that same month.

She had said in interviews that she was also avoiding dating to focus on her career but she was linked to several men throughout the year. There were rumors she was dating 46-year-old photographer Terry Richardson, photographer Gavin Doyle, and her Canyons co-star James Deen. She was also seen partying with Samantha Ronson again but it did not appear they were rekindling their relationship. Most recently she has been linked to Max George from The Wanted.

2012 was supposed to be Lindsay’s big comeback year. She booked three films, a guest spot on Glee, and a Saturday Night Live appearance. Her episode of SNL didn’t quite win over her skeptics. Many called her performance lazy and felt she lacked energy. It was her role portraying Liz Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz & Dick, however, that garnered the most attention. Before filming even started there was a lot of press over the cost of getting the troubled actress insured. During filming her life personal life seemed to be affecting her work. She was late to set one day and paramedics had to be called to her hotel room. She was treated for dehydration and exhaustion but was seen back on the party scene 48 hours later. Many questioned if Lindsay was talented enough to fill the shoes of such an iconic actress and once the film premiered, it seemed that she could not. Critics ripped the film apart. Lindsay also has a starring role in the upcoming film The Canyons and shot a cameo in Scary Movie 5 co-starring with Charlie Sheen. She had an interview scheduled with Barbara Walters to promote Liz & Dick which she canceled but made an appearance on Leno a few days later. Toward the end of 2012, Lindsay also shot a cameo in an R.E.M. music video directed by James Franco.

Lindsay was sued by several people for incidents that occurred when she was behind the wheel including a paparazzo her car struck it 2010. She crashed her Porsche into a truck in June and had her assistant lie to police that he was driving. She was formally charged with lying to the police about the accident on the same day she arrested in New York City for assaulting a women at a nightclub. This was only two months after she was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident after her car struck a man in front of Manhattan’s Dream Hotel. Lindsay also settled old lawsuits including the case against the Betty Ford staffer whom she fought with during her stint in rehab and against the three men whom she took on a joyride 2007 when she was arrested for a DUI and cocaine possession. She was served by a homeless U.S Marine who claimed she had agreed to help him uncover a conspiracy about the death of Bin Laden. She was performing community service while on probation and getting good reviews from the judge but it seemed to fade pretty quickly once her mandatory hours were completed. In August, she was accused of stealing over $100,000 worth of watches and sunglasses from a party at a Hollywood mansion which she blamed on Andrew Knight, son of Suge Knight. She also ran into a lot of financial trouble this year. Reports came out that she is in massive tax debt and the IRS froze her accounts in November. Charlie Sheen even gave her money to help pay it off. She was banned from Chateau Marmont for an unpaid bill which she had the producers of Liz & Dick pay.

Driving Issues:

Amanda Bynes’ troubles began when she was pulled over for a ticket in March for speaking on her cell phone. She sped away from the cop writing the ticket but later went down to the station to sign it. In April she was arrested for a DUI after her car struck the back of an L.A. county sheriff’s vehicle. She was released on $5,000 bail but The Standard Hotel in L.A. banned her as a result. Bynes and family insist that she doesn’t drink. The following months brought several other driving incidents. She took to Twitter to deny all hit and run accusations and the DUI charge. She tweeted, “Hey @BarackObama. . . I don’t drink. Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don’t hit and run. The end.” She pleaded not guilty to her DUI in June but didn’t appear in person to make the plea in court and she eventually deleted her twitter account along with her history of tweets. As 2012 rolled on, so did her issues behind the wheel. Her driver’s license was finally suspend in September when she was officially charged with two hit-and runs. Even after this went down, she was pulled over for driving without headlights and caught driving with a suspended license. TMZ allegedly caught Amanda still driving around town with her suspended license while smoking marijuana. When she was pulled over again a few days later her car was finally impounded. As things continued to get out of hand for the former child star, Lindsay Lohan chimed in and tweeted, “Why did I get put in jail and a nickelodeon star has had NO punishment(s) so far?”

Strange Public Appearances:

Reports began to surface that Bynes’ odd behavior may actually be a mental illness and not alcohol or drugs as speculated. Sources apparently spotted her at the gym talking to herself and randomly laughing hysterically for no reason. She continued to deny the need for rehab saying that she is not having a meltdown and there was also no need for a conservatorship. She was later spotted talking to inanimate objects and was rumored to have barricaded herself inside the dressing room of a store for nearly two hours. On September 20th, she spoke to People and said “I am doing amazing. I am retired as an actor. I am moving to New York to launch my career. I am going to do a fashion line. I am not talking about being arrested for DUI because I don’t drink, and I don’t drink and drive. It is all false.” The same story cites another bizarre incident where Bynes supposedly got hot during a spin class and took her top off revealing only a black push-up bra. She then proceeded to fix her hair and re-apply her makeup. When she finished she put her top back on and left.

New York:

When Fall came around, Amanda missed another court appearance because her lawyer said she had relocated to New York indefinitely. There were rumors that she was walking around nude at a NYC tanning salon but the CEO of Beachbum Tans denied the event ever took place. The actress told X17 Online, “I’m suing In Touch for printing a fake story. I’m not troubled. I don’t get naked in public. I’m 26, a multi-millionaire, retired. Please respect my privacy.” In November, she reactivated her Twitter and joined Instagram. One photo shows Bynes wearing what appears to be a red turban along with large sunglasses and a dark shade of lipstick. She posted that picture along with the captions “What up doe?” and “<3 my turban!” The troubled actress also shared a photo of her butt and legs with the caption “Losing weight is hard to do! I love jeans with sexy holes, mine are from Current Elliot :D” Most recently, she was reportedly taking a casual stroll around New York City when she stumbled upon a group of photographers waiting for Justin Bieber. According to E! Online, she quickly grabbed a cab to escape the mob but stopped the cab to let them know that they were breaking the law.

Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart seemed to be doing fantastic at the start of 2012. She was named the face of a new fragrance. Both were making new movies and gearing up for the release of the final Twilight film. They even started being affectionate in public which they had not done since the start of their romance while filming the first film. Snow White and the Huntsman hit theaters in June and Kristen became Hollywood’s highest paid actress. In early July there were rumors they were engaged which Pattinson shot down in Blackbook and then on July 24th People reported that Kristen cheated with her married director on Snow White and the Huntsman, Rupert Sanders. A source told the magazine, “She wasn’t having an affair with Rupert. It was just a fleeting moment that shouldn’t have happened. She never meant to hurt anyone. She’s a good person who just made a bad choice.” Fans were devastated. 22-year-old Kristen issued a public apology saying, “I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.” The fling had reportedly happened after the movie was completed. 41-year-old Rupert Sanders issued an apology saying, “I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together.” Rupert’s wife, Liberty Ross tweeted, “sometimes bad things fall apart so better things can fall together,” before deleting her account. Some speculation began that the relationship was never real and it was all just publicity for the movies. The theory was that they needed some way to break up now that the last movie was coming out. Rob moved out of the house they shared and was reportedly devastated and not speaking to Kristen. Not long after the news broke, Us Weekly leaked photos of Kristen making out and hooking up with Rupert in a car. Rob took shelter at Reese Witherspoon’s home in Ojai, California to try and escape the media frenzy. Twilight producers insisted the breakup would not affect publicity for Breaking Dawn Part 2. Bill Condon told Entertainment Weekly, “The fact is, these are actors playing parts, and maybe it’s not such a bad thing that people be reminded of that.” Pattinson’s first post-scandal interview was an appearance on The Daily Show where Jon Stewart presented him with some ice cream. There were rumors that Kristen Stewart would not be a part of the planned Snow White sequel. Robert chose not to address the break-up in his media tour for Cosmopolis. On September 20th, People reported that the couple reunited in L.A. and were heading toward a reconciliation. The pair reportedly moved back in together and it was reported that they would be appearing together during the international press tour for Breaking Dawn Part 2. In October it was reported that they are officially back together and have since been seen in public being affectionate again. It is rumored that despite reconciliation there are major trust issues between them.

Fresh on the heels of her divorce, things heated up for Kim and Kanye West in 2012. The rumors were circulating in the early part of the year that Kim stole Kanye away from Amber Rose. It wasn’t until they were together for Paris Fashion Week in March that their relationship really started to come out in public and the following month it became official. Khloe and Lamar were going strong all year and dealt with Lamar being let go from his gig playing for Dallas. It was rumored all year that Khloe was desperate to have a child but was having trouble conceiving. Kourtney, however, had no problems. She and Scott spent much of the year prepping for baby number two. On July 8th, they welcomed their daughter Penelope into the world. The tabloids have been reporting that Scott will be proposing during the upcoming season of their reality show but Kourtney has some serious concerns about his hard-partying lifestyle. Tabloids have also been reporting that Bruce and Kris Jenner are on the verge of divorce. Bruce has publicly denied the rumors. Rob Kardashian had been dating singer Rita Ora but have recently broken up over accusations that she cheated.

The New York Post reported the Kim and Khloe were facing a class-action lawsuit for their diet QuickTrim which contains an ingredient that’s “not safe or effective for weight loss.” Kim’s divorce also remained the focus throughout much of the year. Kris reportedly wanted the divorce trial to be completely public so he could expose Kim as a fraud but it was eventually decided to be kept private. Khloe fought against allegations that Robert Kardashian was not her real father. She had a very public fight against Robert’s second and third wives who claimed that he confided in them that Khloe was not really his. It was finally revealed that she is his daughter from the paperwork of a marriage annulment he had with his third wife. In October, Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe were hit with a lawsuit regarding their upcoming cosmetic line, Khroma. A businessman who started a high end makeup company called Chroma believes the Kardashian brand’s availability at stores like CVS and Sears would diminish the reputation of his brand. A second cosmetic company called Kroma also joined the fight.

Rumors of a Kardashian Magazine came and went. They were reportedly in talks with American Media Inc. but allegedly ended because Kris demanded complete editorial control. They also announced the launch of their makeup line (see legal.) The family also made a lot of television appearances outside of their reality shows. Kim made a cameo on an episode of Last Man Standing and had a recurring role on Drop Dead Diva. She also has a role in Tyler Perry’s upcoming movie, The Marriage Counselor. She also attended the White House Correspondents Dinner as a guest of Fox News. Khloe landed a radio show in Texas and later scored the coveted role of host on season two of X Factor alongside Mario Lopez. She cut ties with PETA after Kim was flour-bombed while walking the red carpet by a woman with connections to the organization. Rob Kardashian was a guest on NBC’s dating show The Choice and tweeted back in August that he would be attending law school but the school had no knowledge of his enrollment or application. Kendall Jenner continued modeling. She and Kylie signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster to write a young adult series. Oprah interviewed the whole family on Oprah’s Next Chapter in June. Bruce became a correspondent for the summer Olympics for E! It was also reported in October that Kris has been shopping around a daytime talk show and may be heading to Fox.

Prince William and Kate Middleton adopted a puppy in February. For Prince William’s birthday in June, he inherited his half of the trust his late mother set up for her two sons before she died. It is worth well over $31 million. Kate topped Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list in August — the same month that Prince Harry found himself involved in a nude picture scandal following a wild night in Las Vegas. A month later, a French tabloid leaked topless photos of Kate. Throughout the year it was rumored that Kate was pregnant and in December, the palace finally released a statement confirming what tabloids had been speculating about. Middleton was admitted to the hospital to be treated for severe morning sickness. During her stay, a nurse at the hospital was pranked by Australian radio DJs pretending to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. The nurse later committed suicide and the palace released a statement of sympathy for the woman’s family.

TLC premiered a new show in August that became a ratings smash and a nationwide controversy. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is a spin-off of Toddlers & Tiaras featuring Alana Thompson and her redneck Georgia family. Some reviews of the show called it “a horror story posing as reality television” and an “exploitative mess” while others said it was “charmingly self-aware.” Family matriarch, Mama June, shuts out all of the haters and said she they would continue the show as long as Alana enjoyed doing it. The show was such a hit for the network that TLC gave the entire family a raise and ordered more episodes. Celebrities like Rosie O’Donnell and Miley Cyrus proclaimed their for the show while others like Adam Levine went so far as to call the show “the DECAY of Western civilization.” Alana became an aunt to her 18-year-old sister’s baby who was born with three thumbs and was photographed being fed mountain dew. Alana’s father Sugar Bear was hospitalized in September with an infection in his leg. Despite rumors that some sites were reporting, there was no need to amputate. Another star of the show, “Crazy” cousin Tony was recently arrested for reckless conduct for taking part in a dangerous prank involving a gorilla suit. Honey Boo Boo was also named one of Barbara Walters’ Most Fascinating People of 2012.

2012 seemed to be a year of growing up for the cast of the Jersey Shore, specifically everyone’s favorite meatball. It seemed only fitting that MTV decided to make this year the final chapter for the hard-partying guidos. Early in January, Snooki told Ellen that her days of heavy boozing were behind her. However, that didn’t stop the mayor of Hoboken from rejecting MTV’s request to film Snooki and Jwoww’s spinoff show in the city. In February, some outlets were reporting that Snooki was pregnant but her rep shot down the rumors only for them to be confirmed less than a month later. She and the baby’s father, Jionni LaValle, got engaged less than a week after the big announcement. The big news also forced the star to give up tanning. For the final season of Jersey Shore, it was decided that Snooki would participate but live in a separate house so she could focus on her health and comfort during her pregnancy. Snooki and Jionni welcomed their son Lorenzo into the world on August 26th.

Kevin Clash, the puppeteer and voice of Sesame Street’s Elmo, was accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage boy. Clash admitted that he had a relationship with his accuser but that the boy was over the age of consent when it began. He decided to take a leave of absence from Sesame Street to fight the allegations. A few days after the news broke, Clash’s accuser recanted his accusation and agreed that he was over 18 when their relationship began. Rumors began to circulate that the alleged victim was unhappy that he accepted a settlement in exchange for having everyone believe that he was a liar. A second and third accuser eventually came forward and Kevin gave his permanent resignation to Sesame Street Workshop.

In early 2012 Paula Deen announced to the world that she had been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The celebrity chef has built a career around cooking butter-loaded dishes and fried foods. Along with her admission came the news that she would be teaming up with drug maker Novo Nordisk to help people living with the disease and to promote their diabetes drug. Many people were outraged upon hearing the news because she had hid the news for a long time while continuing to promote unhealthy eating habits. In May she spoke with Nancy O’Dell about the progress she was making and revealed that she had already lost around 30 pounds.

A male masseur came forward in May claiming that John Travolta sexually assaulted him during a massage appointment. According to the lawsuit he filed, Travolta scheduled a massage with the alleged victim and proceeded to display condoms, grope the masseur, and offer him oral sex. Travolta issued a statement calling the incident complete fiction. A second masseur came forward shortly after which was also called an absurd accusation. The lawyer hired to represent the alleged victims claimed there were other accusers who have come forward as well. The first accuser’s case was dismissed in court but he later hired Gloria Allred to help him try again. A gym employee also came forward accusing John of fondling him against his will. Travolta’s second accuser also dismissed his initial claim to move forward with Gloria Allred representing him. The accusers’ first lawyer later sued Allred for stealing his clients. In June, a cruise ship worker came forward claiming the actor exposed himself to him after calling the employee to his room for a food delivery. Travolta countersued once again calling the accusation all lies. In August, a man who once worked as Travolta’s pilot claimed to have had a six-year relationship with him that ended in 1992 when John married Kelly Preston. Gay rumors continue to surround John as his ex-pilot recently filed a lawsuit seeking the right to openly discuss his relationship with the actor.

LIN-SANITY!: For a few weeks in February, people around the nation and even other parts of the world, many of them not even basketball fans, were taken over by “Lin-sanity,” when little-known New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, the first American-Taiwanese NBA player, came out of nowhere and started turning in amazing performances that were lifting his team to victory. Like far too many good things though, it had to come to an end, and Lin started cooling down, and then was done for the rest of the season when he got hurt at the end of March and had to have knee surgery. Still, Knicks fans were shocked when it was announced in July that Lin was leaving New York for the Houston Rockets, when the Knicks wouldn’t match the Rockets’ three-year, $25 million offer for the 23-year-old.

COLTS DROP MANNING, BRONCOS TRADE TEBOW: In two headline-grabbing — and connected — player moves, the Indianapolis Colts released quarterback Peyton Manning in March after 14 years and the Denver Broncos traded their popular QB, Tim Tebow to the New York Jets, after they snapped up Manning. The Broncos beat out at least four other teams to get Manning, a four-time NFL MVP, but it meant they no longer needed Tebow, who’d gotten them to the playoffs last season from a 1-4 start and became a national sensation. So they traded him to the Jets, where he became a backup to starter Mark Sanchez. Tebow has gotten little playing time this season, even as Sanchez has performed poorly.

SAINTS HEAD COACH SUSPENDED FOR SEASON OVER BOUNTY SCANDAL: The NFL suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton without pay for the current 2012-2013 season in an unprecedented punishment for a bounty system from 2009 — the season the Saints won their only Super Bowl — to 2011 that gave out cash bonuses for hurting key opposing players and knocking them out of games. Four players were punished as well, with defensive captain Jonathan Vilma also suspended without pay for the entire season, and shorter bans for defensive end Will Smith, defensive linesman Anthony Hargrove and linebacker Scott Fujita, who are now with different teams. The Saints were also fined $500,000 and lost their second-round draft picks for two years.

ROGER CLEMENS ACQUITTED: Pitching great Roger Clemens was acquitted in June by a federal jury on all charges that he obstructed and lied to Congress in denying he used performance-enhancing drugs, the exoneration coming in a second trial after an earlier prosecution last year ended in a mistrial. The government’s case had relied heavily on the testimony of Clemens’ longtime strength coach, Brian McNamee — who even the prosecution conceded was a, quote, “flawed man” — who testified he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with HGH in 2000.

REPORT SAYS TOP PENN STATE OFFICIALS COVERED UP SANDUSKY CHILD SEX ABUSE: A scathing report out on July 12th said that top Penn State officials and then-football coach Joe Paterno covered up the child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago out of fear of bad publicity. Former FBI director Louis Freeh headed up the probe, which found that former President Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley, former VP Gary Schultz and Paterno repeatedly concealed critical facts about Sandusky’s child abuse. In a blow to the late Paterno’s legacy, Freeh said the legendary coach, quote, “was an integral part of this active decision to conceal,” and that his firing was justified.

PENN STATE SPARED ‘DEATH PENALTY’: The NCAA spared Penn State football from the so-called “death penalty,” a total suspension of the program for a year of more, over the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, but still came down hard on the school. A July 24th announcement said that it had suspended Penn State from the post-season for four years, slashed the number of scholarships it can award, vacated all of the team’s victories from 1998 to 2011, and imposed a fine of $60 million, with the money to go to programs for preventing child sex abuse or helping victims. As a result, late former coach Joe Paterno’s record was reduced by 111 wins, stripping him of the top spot as winningest coach in major college football.

GIANTS’ CABRERA SUSPENDED 50 GAMES FOR POSITIVE DRUG TEST: San Francisco Giants’ outfielder Melky Cabrera, who was named the MVP of baseball’s All-Star Game in July and was having a career year, was suspended for 50 games one month later after testing positive for testosterone. Cabrera had been leading the National League with 159 hits and was second in batting average at .346.

AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB ACCEPTS WOMEN: After 80 years, Augusta National Golf Club finally decided to admit women, ending its controversial all-male policy. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore were invited in August to join, both of whom said yes.

NFL REFS LOCKED OUT: Football fans discovered a newfound love for the NFL referees when they were locked out in a labor dispute with the league for the start of the season and replacement refs were officiating games instead. There was a growing outcry from players, announcers and fans as calls were repeatedly botched over the first three weeks, culminating in a hugely controversial ending to a Monday Night Football game at the end of September between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers. A deal was reached to end the lockout two days later, and the regular refs were back on the field for that week’s Thursday night game, where they got an ovation from the stadium crowd.

FEATHERWEIGHT BOXER CRUZ COMES OUT AS GAY: Puerto Rican featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz came out as gay in October, believed to be the first professional boxer to reveal that he’s gay while still competing. The announcement came two weeks before Cruz beat Jorge Pazos of Mexico for the WBO Latino title. Cruz is ranked as the World Boxing Organization’s Number 2 featherweight.

LANCE ARMSTRONG STRIPPED OF SEVEN TOUR DE FRANCE TITLES: U.S. cyclist Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles in October, from 1999 to 2005, by the International Cycling Union and banned for life for doping. The move cames after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a damning report two weeks ago earlier that detailed its evidence of drug use and trafficking by Armstrong and his Tour-winning teams. The report, which included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong, said he and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The former teammates also said Armstrong pressured them to dope. Armstrong, who maintains his innocence, was cleared of criminal charges in February after a two-year federal grand jury investigation.

NYC MARATHON CANCELED IN WAKE OF SUPERSTORM SANDY: Mayor Mike Bloomberg canceled the New York City Marathon two days before it was supposed to be run on November 4th, after coming under increasing pressure for saying the annual race would go on despite Superstorm Sandy, which had heavily damaged areas of the city just days earlier. Critics said the marathon would draw city resources when they were still needed in Sandy’s aftermath, and also questioned the appropriateness of holding the race. After the cancellation, many of the disappointed marathoners used what would have been race day to help victims of the storm.

BECKHAM WINS MLS CUP IN FINAL GAME WITH GALAXY: The Los Angeles Galaxy won the MLS Cup for the second year in a row on December 1st, repeating as champs in David Beckham’s final game with the team. Beckham had announced two weeks earlier that he would be leaving, and while the 37-year-old British soccer superstar said he isn’t retiring, but didn’t give any indication what his next move will be. Beckham played for the Galaxy for six seasons after his groundbreaking move from Real Madrid. MLS has grown exponentially since Beckham’s U.S. arrival, expanding to 19 North American teams with record attendance.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS’ BELCHER KILLS GIRLFRIEND, HIMSELF: On December 1st, 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and mother of their three-month-old child and then drove to the team’s practice facility, where took his own life in the parking lot in front of Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli after thanking them for all they’d done for him. Belcher and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Kassandra Perkins, had been arguing when Belcher shot her.

NO HOCKEY THIS SEASON?: As we head toward the end of the year, it’s looking more and more likely that the 2011-2012 NHL season will be canceled. The league and players have not been able to reach an agreement to end the lockout that began in September, despite repeated talks, including with the help of federal mediators, and, most recently, between players and owners directly. All games through December 14th, along with the New Year’s Day Winter Classic and the All-Star game, have already been canceled, and if the entire season does get wiped out, if will be for the second time in the past decade, after the 2004-2005 season was canceled because a labor deal couldn’t be reached.
