One of Monopoly’s Classic Game Tokens Being Replaced

One of Monopoly’s iconic game tokens is going to be replaced, and gamemaker Hasbro wants you to decide which one it will be. Votes can be made through February 5th on Monopoly’s Facebook page, with all of the tokens up for possible banishment — the car, thimble, boot, Scottie dog, battleship, hat, iron and wheelbarrow. Ballots are cast for which piece the voter wants to save. As of last night (January 9th), the wheelbarrow was in the most trouble, with only three percent of the “save” votes, followed by the iron and the boot, which were tied at six percent. The Scottie dog was in the lead with 33 percent of the “save” vote, followed by the car with 15 percent. Also up to voters is which new piece will replace the one that’s dumped, from the choices of a helicopter, diamond ring, robot, cat and guitar. The new Monopoly with the updated game pieces will hit stores later this year. This isn’t the first time Hasbro has changed the classic Monopoly tokens. Three of the game’s original ones, a purse, lantern and rocking horse, were replaced in the 1950s by the Scottie dog, wheelbarrow and a man on horseback.

PSY In Superbowl Commercial

Continuing to ride the wave from the blockbuster success of his song “Gangnam Style,” South Korean singer and rapper Psy will be making his mark on the pinnacle of American popular culture next month with an appearance in a Super Bowl commercial. Psy will star in Wonderful Pistachios’ first Super Bowl commercial on February 3rd, wearing his signature green suit to match the pistachio color and showing a special way to crack open the nuts. This will be the first commercial shown in the U.S. featuring Psy, who told USA Today that the 30-second spot will include new lyrics for “Gangnam Style.”

Beyonce In GQ

Beyonce shows off her voluptuous body on the cover of GQ’s Sexiest Women of the 21st Century issue, wearing only a cut-off T-shirt, belly chain and leopard underwear. The rest of her steamy pictorial hits newsstands on January 15.

People’s Choice Awards

The odds turned out to be in favor of The Hunger Games as the film and its stars won big at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday (January 9th) by taking home six awards. Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco was on hand to host the show for the second year in a row. Although she may have flubbed one of her lines early in the program, Cuoco definitely seemed comfortable taking on the role for another round. The two-hour ceremony was full of celebrity presenters, speeches thanking the fans, and a few musical performances scattered in between.

Katy Perry was the big winner on the music side again this year. The pop star happily took the stage to receive her statue for Favorite Pop Artist but also earned the most votes for Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Music Video, and Favorite Music Fan Following. While accepting the awards, she announced how much she looks forward to entertaining her fans again which motivates her to head back into the studio.

The show included musical performances from Alicia Keys, Jason Aldean, and Christina Aguilera. Keys performed her songs Girl on Fire and New Day. Later in the show, Aldean brought the house to their feet with his hit My Kind of Party. Christina rounded out the night’s musical entertainment with an emotional rendition of her song Blank Page off of her Lotus album.

The people also gave out special awards to Sandra Bullock — recipient of the favorite humanitarian award and Christina Aguilera who was given the people’s voice award.

  • Surprisingly, the people voted for The Wanted as Favorite Breakout Artist over One Direction but Directions could take solace in the fact that their boys went home with the Favorite Song and Favorite Album statues.
  • The gays also seemed to get a lot of love this year. Ellen DeGeneres was the people’s Favorite Daytime TV Host and The New Normal was voted Favorite New TV Comedy. It’s also worth noting that four of the five nominees for Favorite Comedic TV Actor were out and proud gay men.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SHOW:

Kaley Cuoco seemed to take a page from Billy Crystal’s book of hosting — kicking off the show by editing herself into some of the year’s biggest movies including The Avengers, The Hunger Games, and Twilight.

Olivia Munn announced Taylor Swift as the people’s Favorite Country Artist and then proceeded to rip the trophy from Taylor’s hands to which Swift responded “This always happens!”

Robert Downey Jr. dedicated his award to an 83-year-old fan who passed away a few days earlier.

Despite the fact that their characters graduated from high school last season, fans still gleek out over Chris Colfer and Lea Michele. The co-stars took home Favorite Comedic Male Actor and Comedic Female Actress.

Throughout the show, Kaley Cuoco read out gag ideas that Twitter users wanted to see happen at the close of the show. The idea to have Heidi Klum have a segway race against a monkey won and the race occurred as confetti fell over the audience.
