Melissa McCarthy’s new film Identity Thief was a huge hit at the box office over the weekend but critics didn’t seem too enthusiastic about the comedy. One review, written by Rex Reed of the New York Observer, has come under fire for referring to the actress as “tractor-sized” and a “hippo” while bashing the movie. The 74-year-old critic described Melissa’s career as a study in “being obese and obnoxious with equal success.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, industry heavyweights and web commenters alike have come to the defense of McCarthy and had some harsh words for Mr. Reed. Bridesmaids director Paul Feig tweeted, “For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f**k himself.” One commenter on the Observer’s website wrote, “He’s pushing 80 and will be dead soon. Enjoy your remaining years, a***ole!”
- Other commenters suggested that Reed would never write those things about overweight men like Jonah Hill or John Goodman.
- Rex also got into some hot water for suggesting that Sarah Jessica Parker should get wart-removal surgery in his review of the Sex and the City movie.
