Pistorius Charged With Killing Girlfriend

Oscar Pistorius, the South African double-amputee sprinter nicknamed the “Blade Runner,” was charged Thursday (February 14th) in the death of his 30-year-old girlfriend, who was found shot to death at his Pretoria home. Police said Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times early Thursday morning at Pistorius’ home, where a 9-millimeter pistol was found and the 26-year-old Paralympic and Olympic athlete was arrested for murder. The cause of the shooting remains unclear, but police said they had received calls in the past about domestic altercations at Pistorius’ home. Pistorius made history last year in London when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics, making it as far as the semifinals of the 400-meters competing on carbon-fiber blades. Pistorius and Steenkamp, a model who was named one of the world’s 100 Sexist Women for two years in a row by FHM magazine and who also had a law degree, were first seen together publicly in November. One of her last tweets was a message for Pistorius about Valentine’s Day that said, “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow? It should be a day of love for everyone.”
