Today Show Drama

New York magazine writer Joe Hagan has written a pretty damning expose about NBC’s Today Show which made its way online on Sunday (March 24th.) The article explores the infamous firing of Ann Curry and how Matt Lauer benefited from everything that went down.

According to the article, research gathered before Curry’s ousting revealed that it was actually Lauer who was losing appeal with viewers for “looking aloof, a little bit holier-than-thou, and pompous” and that both anchors were on the chopping block. Matt allegedly began working out a deal to move over to ABC when he heard he was possibly being replaced by Ryan Seacrest but ended up using the offer from ABC to renegotiate his contract at Today. Hagan wrote, “At the moment when he had maximum leverage with NBC, Lauer, as the multimillion-dollar megastar, could easily have saved her — but he didn’t. Which doesn’t make him a horrible person — it makes him, for better or worse, a pro.”

  • Hagan’s profile of the behind-the-scenes drama also discusses Matt’s rumored affair with correspondent Natalie Morales, strange pranks he played on the cast — including one which made Ann cry, and Lauer’s tense relationship with a New York Times reporter covering the story of Ann’s departure.
  • The article also claims that NBC did not allow Ann Curry to tweet well-wishes to ailing Robin Roberts for fear that she was trying to “aid the enemy.”
  • Today is also making headlines this week for airing an interview between Jerry Sandusky and a man hoping to exonerate Joe Paterno’s involvement in the sex abuse scandal.
