Conway Town Meeting Completed Today

CONWAY’S TOWN MEETING PROCESS FINISHES TUESDAY WITH FINAL VOTING ON TOWN AND SCHOOL DISTRICT ARTICLES. TOWN MANAGER EARL SIRES URGES RESIDENTS TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE IMPORTANT DUTY OF SELF-GOVERNANCE BY GOING TO THE POLLS.

VOTING TAKES PLACE AT THE CONWAY RECREATION CENTER, 1808 EAST MAIN ST., CENTER CONWAY, FROM 8 A.M.UNTIL 7 P.M. TUESDAY. THE TOWN CLERK’S OFFICE WILL CLOSE AT 1 P.M.

VOTERS WILL BE ASKED TO VOTE FOR VARIOUS TOWN OFFICIALS AND CONSIDER A TOWN OPERATING BUDGET OF ABOUT $9,687,000. THE DEFAULT BUDGET AMOUNT IS ONLY ABOUT $84,000 LESS.

THE 2012 CONWAY TOWN REPORT CONTAINS A LIST OF ALL CANDIDATES AND ARTICLES TO BE VOTED ON, INCLUDING AN EXPLANATION OF EACH ARTICLE.

ONCE AGAIN CONWAY VOTERS WILL BE ASKED – LIKE OTHER TOWNS AROUND CARROLL COUNTY – TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO GIVE $3,000 TO HELP FUND THE BLUE LOON BUS SERVICE RUN BY TRI COUNTY CAP. THE ARTICLE IS NOT RECOMMENDED BY SELECTMEN AND IS RECOMMENDED BY THE MUNICIPAL BUDGET COMMITTEE.

OTHER ARTICLES INCLUDE WHETHER TO ESTABLISH AN EXPENDABLE TRUST FUND FOR POLICE DEPT. EARNED BENEFIT PAYMENTS, RECOMMENDED BY SELECTMEN AND NOT RECOMMENDED BY THE BUDGET COMMITTEE. LT. CHRIS PERLEY TOLD ATTENDEES AT THE DELIBERATIVE MEETING IN MARCH CREATING THE FUND WOULD SAVE THE TOWN MONEY.

ANOTHER ARTICLE ASKS WHETHER VOTERS WILL APPROVE SPENDING $6,000 TO BUY DRUG EVIDENCE TERMINATOR EQUIPMENT THAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT CAN USE TO SAFELY DISPOSE OF DANGEROUS DRUGS.

ANOTHER ARTICLE ASKS IF TOWN VOTERS WILL APPROVE SPENDING $50,000 TO BUY AN EMERGENCY GENERATOR FOR USE AT THE CONWAY EMERGENCY SHELTER AT THE CONWAY RECREATION BUILDING. THIS ARTICLE IS RECOMMENDED BY SELECTMEN BUT NOT RECOMMENDED BY THE BUDGET COMMITTEE.

ONE ARTICLE – SUBMITTED BY PETITION – ASKS IF VOTERS WANT TO AMEND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION TO SAY THE RIGHTS AND PROTECTIONS AFFORDED TO CITIZENS APPLY ONLY TO “NATURAL PERSONS.”

VOTERS WILL ALSO CONSIDER CONWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT ISSUES, INCLUDING A PROPOSED BUDGET OF ABOUT $33,137,000.
