PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS IN CARROLL COUNTY WILL PROVIDE FREE FLU SHOTS TO STUDENTS AT PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTY STARTING IN EARLY OCTOBER, 2013.

JIM RICHARDSON –THE PREPAREDNESS COORDINATOR AT THE CARROLL COUNTY COALITION FOR PUBLIC HEALTH – SAYS HE IS COORDINATING WITH THE THREE SAUs IN THE COUNTY – 9, 13 AND 49 – THAT CONTROL ABOUT TWO DOZEN SCHOOLS – TO PROVIDE THE SHOTS TO CHILDREN FROM KINDERGARTEN TO 12^TH GRADE – A TOTAL OF ABOUT 6,600 STUDENTS.

THE COALITION IS WORKING WITH THE CARROLL COUNTY MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS AND THE NEW HAMPSHIRE IMMUNIZATION BUREAU. THE MONEY TO FUND THE PROGRAM COMES FROM A GRANT FROM THE BUREAU AND THE VACCINE IS PROVIDED BY THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL.

RICHARDSON SAYS EACH CLINIC TYPICALLY TAKES ABOUT TWO HOURS AND THE COALITION PROVIDES EVERYTHING NEEDED, INCLUDING EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES AND SUPPORT STAFF.

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS WILL GET A PACKET FROM THEIR CHILD’S SCHOOL CONTAINING A CONSENT FORM AND VACCINE INFORMATION SHEET. THE CONSENT FORM SHOULD BE SIGNED AND RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL NURSE.

THE FLU CLINICS WILL BEGIN IN CONWAY, MADISON AND EFFINGHAM FRIDAY OCT. 4, 2013 AND WILL OFFER SMALL NEEDLE INJECTIONS AS WELL AS THE NASAL MIST.

RICHARDSON RECOMMENDS CONSULTING WITH YOUR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER TO FIND OUT WHAT FORM IS APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR CHILD – AND TO DISCUSS ANY POSSIBLE CONCERNS OR COMPLICATIONS.
