And that’s why I fell.”
Elle Magazine Under Fire Again
Elle magazine has found itself at the center of another controversy over the way they use Mindy Kaling on the cover of their “Women in TV Issue.” Mindy is on one of four covers which also feature Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel, and Allison Williams but Mindy is the only one who is pictured up close and in black & white. Both the Mindy Project star and reps for the magazine have responded to the backlash that the 34-year-old was portrayed differently because of her weight and ethnicity.
Elle released a statement saying, “Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue.” Kaling tweeted on Tuesday (January 7th,) “Wishing for more skin on my @ELLEmagazine cover? Chris Messina & I are naked on a brand new #themindyproject tonight, ya pervs! 930/830 FOX” She later wrote, “I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me”
- Styleite’s Lauren Valenti addressed the controversy saying, “Kaling has said publicly that she’s a size 8, and while that’s an average size for normal women, it’s not exactly the Hollywood status quo. It would have been a powerful move for Elle to show a full-length shot, especially considering that they’ve landed in turmoil for failing to do just that with Gabourey Sidibe.”
- Elle also caused a stir back in October when Melissa McCarthy was featured on one of four covers for the “Women in Hollywood” issue but was the only one covered up in a large overcoat instead of a more form-fitting outfit.
