Cross country skiing enthusiasts will celebrate the spirit and
accomplishments of a late longtime season passholder at Jackson Ski
Touring Center in Jackson Saturday.

That’s when in memory of the West Newbury Mass. native and Valley
resident, the touring center will host the 4th Annual Dave Duncanson
Memorial Jackson Ski Touring Groomed Trail Challenge.

Touring Center Exec. Director Thom Perkins says the challenge was
started four years ago as an experiment to show people how big the trail
system is in Jackson.

Two others have done it since, but Duncanson was the first person to ski
all the groomed trails in a single day. He did it in 2011 when he was 58
years old, skiing about 115 kilometers. He died of cancer in November,
2013 at the age of 60.

Duncanson was known as an outdoor adventurer, inventor, engineer and
athlete – and he and Perkins shared a common love of sailing.

Perkins says the challenge is a great way for skiers to experience
different terrain and trails they might not normally go on. It’s not a
race and you certainly don’t have to do all the trails in the 11-hour
day, he says. The main idea is to get out, enjoy conditions he describes
as superb, and have a great time.
