Do You Need a College Degree to Be President?

Should anyone who wants to be president have at least a college degree? Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate, doesn’t have one, and he’s being dogged by the question. Walker studied political science, economics and philosophy at Marquette University, but left in 1990 when he was 34 credits short of getting his degree. He has said that he thought about going back to finish, but after getting married in 1993 and becoming a father a year later, it was no longer an option for him. Asked again by reporters Wednesday (April 9th) whether a degree is necessary for a presidential run, Walker dodged the question, saying, “I don’t think I needed a college degree to be in the state Assembly, to be county executive nor to be governor. I don’t know about any other position.” Walker did say he would like to complete the course work to get his degree, but said that if he did do so, it wouldn’t be to fill any requirement for political office, but to encourage other people to do the same.
