‘JOKER’ NARROWLY BEATS ‘MALEFICENT’ AT THE B.O. – (10/28/2019)
Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker edged out Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil at the box office this weekend. Warner Bros’ Joker netted $18.9 million, while Disney’s Maleficent managed to scare up $18.5 million.
Joker has become the top-grossing R-rated film of all time, and has topped the box office for four weeks in a row. Maleficent has underperformed, making $65.4 million thus far in the U.S., but is doing better overseas, with a $293.5 million haul worldwide.
Rounding out the top three is MGM/UAR’s The Addams Family, which beat Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap for third, $11.7M versus $11.6M.
