Conway Scenic Railroad’s “Trains, Planes, & Automobiles” Event – Saturday, June 29th

The train will depart from our North Conway station at 9:00 a.m. – please note special time – and arrive in Whitefield at approximately 11:45am.   About two hours will be allowed to enjoy activities, displays, and demonstrations there, including the following:

One Percent for the Valley

A new non-profit is looking to harness the power of the free market for the environment. One Percent for the Valley is a non-profit organization by valley-local Jasmine Schmidt. It’s modeled after an international organization. Schmidt says, “Right now we’ve drafted out a loose budget for what we’re going to do with our funds after we raise them and it’s going to entirely depend on how businesses want to join our organization.” The idea is for various businesses to sign up for 1% of their proceeds going to the non-profit that will then use those funds to develop more environmentally friendly alternative methods of conducting their business. She also says, “If it weren’t for the beauty of our natural environment, we wouldn’t have an economy at all. I think businesses should be the ones making those steps because they’re the ones with the most skin the game when it comes to the environment. They’re the ones that are profiting off of it and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I think businesses and the environment can coexist in a positive way.” Bryce Harrison, co-Founder of Cheese Louise and member of One Percent for the Valley, says that one discussed idea would be to install a water-bottle filling station at Schouler Park in Conway in order to encourage more people to reuse water bottles and reduce plastic waste.

Box Office Recap – 06/17/2019

‘MEN IN BLACK’ LEADS LAME BOX OFFICE – (06/17/2019)

The box office seems to be in a slump, especially when it comes to franchises. Men in Black: International, led by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and Shaft became the latest sequels to be dismissed by audiences. Sony’s MIB led ticket sales at the box office this weekend with $28.5 million, but it fell far short of expectations of $30 million+. 

Previous iterations of MIB, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, all opened with $50 million+. Internationally, MIB generated $73 million, for a total haul of $102.2 million. 

Universal and Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 brought in $23 million. 

Warner Bros. and New Line’s Shaft, starring Samuel L. Jackson, also tanked garnering $14 million in sales. 2000’s Shaft, meanwhile, launched with $21.7 million. 

But originals didn’t fare well either. Late Night, starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson, snagged $5.1 million to land it in ninth place.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down – LISTEN HERE!

Did Taylor Swift break Instagram?

Swift’s promise to live stream at 5 p.m. [ET] for fans on Instagram and “fill you in on some stuff” might be why the platform crashed suddenly yesterday – an outage that lasted more than an hour. A lot of people used Twitter to vent their frustrations – with many placing the blame squarely on Swift.

“Taylor Swift broke Instagram, no big deal,” one Twitter use wrote, while another added, “We all know it was @taylorswift13 fault. Her livestream broke it. Lol ❤#instagramdown.”

But Taylor wanted no part of the blame game. “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative,” she jokingly replied to fan on Tumblr, who said she “broke” Instagram. Tay added a crying laughing emoji.

Then, Taylor revealed who really caused Instagram to crash. In the form of hashtags, she wrote, “I DID NOT BREAK THE INSTAGRAM”,”YALL BROKE THE INSTAGRAM.” And, the fan who Tay replied to found her response hilarious. “SHE CAN FIGHT ME. SHE BROKE THE INSTAGRAM. (I LOVE HER 💗💗💗)”, the fan captioned a screenshot of the exchange to Instagram, tagging Taylor.

Meanwhile, Swift announced her seventh studio album, Lover, comes out August 23rd. The significance of that date? August is the 8th month, and 8 + 2 + 3 = Taylor’s lucky number 13.

Swift also confirmed she would release the album’s second single, “You Need to Calm Down,” at midnight.

But its accompanying music video will arrive June 17th. Swift said the video “has a lot going on” and she wanted it “to be a separate discovery” for fans. She said it will debut on Good Morning America.

“You Need to Calm Down” is the second single from Lover following “Me!” when Brendon Urie utters it in French during the opening scene.

On her new single, Swift tackles the haters and cheats, pondering why they invest so much time in negativity. As the track progresses, she also shows her support for GLAAD and the LGBTQ community.  

“You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace/And control your urges to scream about the people you hate/’Cause shade never made anybody less gay,” she declares.

There will be four deluxe special editions of Lover, all of which will be available at Target and on her official website. The versions will be unique, and will feature two audio tracks that provide a glimpse into her songwriting process.

The cover to the album was shot by photographer Valheria Rocha and features Taylor with blue-tipped hair and a glitter heart around her eye, in front of cotton candy-colored clouds. Taylor said the album is “very romantic”.

Lover will feature a whopping 18 tracks – more than any other Swift album.

Swift also teased a collaboration with fashion designer Stella McCartney, whom the singer praised as “a friend” and “a woman that I really respect.” The collab will be timed to the release of the album, but Swift didn’t provide further details.

While Taylor was making her announcement, Lindsay Lohan was active in the comments section. The 32-year-old actress randomly left comments during the live stream and fans were questioning her motives. “Omg love you! So does my sis [Aliana],” Lindsay first said. “We think you’re great.” Later on, Lindsay added, “You should respond! To your fans!”

Then she said, “My mom was in cats.” Taylor Swift is starring in the upcoming movie adaptation of the musical Cats.

FIRST RESPONDERS LIVE Premieres Tonight at 9pm on FOX

FIRST RESPONDERS LIVE, from the legendary producer Dick Wolf, premieres on FOX Tonight at 9pm. Hosted by Emmy Award-winning television journalist Josh Elliott, the series will provide a raw, in-depth look at the brave American heroes, including firefighters, police officers, EMS technicians and first responders, who put their own lives on the line as they race into danger to save others. Each week, the show will embed cameras in multiple cities across the country, to document a night in the life of these units. Elliott will provide live analysis and commentary, with help from a team of experts, as the show follows first-person accounts of the action.
