BILLIE EILISH WINS BIG AT ‘GRAMMY AWARDS’ – (01/27/2020)
The biggest night in music, the Grammy Awards, went down Sunday night in L.A. at the Staples Center airing live on CBS, with Alicia Keys hosting for the second year running. The non-televised portion 62nd Grammy Awards began with a moment of silence for NBA star Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash earlier in the day, along with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna “Gigi” Bryant.
Going in, Lizzo led the nominations with eight, including Record, Album and Song of the Year. Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X were nominated six times; Eilish, now 18, was 17 when the nominations were announced, making her the youngest artist in Grammys history to get nods in all four major categories at the same time.
Eilish swept the show. She took home Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album. Her brother Finneas won Producer of the Year for his work with her.
Lizzo was also a big winner, walking away with Best Solo Pop Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best Urban Contemporary Album. The late Nipsey Hussle landed Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
HIGHLIGHTS & PERFORMANCES
Before the show kicked off, Ozzy Osbourne made his first major red carpet appearance following his revelation that he is suffering from Parkinson’s disease. The 71-year-old carried a cane and was joined by his daughter, Kelly Osbourne.
Lizzo got the party started in true glam glory performing a medley of her hits starting with “Cuz I Love You,” while occasionally hopping on the flute. Before she got started, she announced: “Tonight is for Kobe.” Bom bom bi dom bi dum bum bay.
Keys took to the stage and immediately brought the room to tears with her thoughtful and heartfelt words about Bryant’s unexpected passing. She was joined by Boyz II Men to sing “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye.”
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani sang “Nobody But You,” and nope, their love story played out onstage still isn’t old.
Keys spoke, and then sang an incredible song about the transformations we’re seeing in music, culture and the wide world; she spoke and sang of hope despite tragedy and chaos. Keys also delivered the message again and again that “music is love.”
The Jonas Brothers performed “What a Man Gotta Do,” along with an unreleased single.
Lizzo gave a rousing, emotional speech thanking her many supporters, and reminding fans to “lift each other up” and keep their struggles in perspective, saying “All of my little problems that I thought were big as the world were gone.”
Tyler the Creator put us under a spell with an energetic, dystopian “New Magic Wand.”
Usher, FKA Twigs and Sheila E. performed a Prince tribute with a medley, which kicked off with “Little Red Corvette.” Reception on social media was mixed. The performance teased “Lets Go Crazy: A Grammy Salute to Prince” airing Tuesday, January 28th on CBS.
Camila Cabello reminded why she’s still Daddy’s girl in “First Man.”
Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker performed “Bring My Flowers Now,” hitting an unexpectedly timely note, as many pointed out on social media.
Ariana Grande performed what started out as a nostalgic medley, including “Imagine” and “7 Rings,” that still managed to morph into steamy sass with lingerie, and yes, “Thank u, Next.”
Eilish took the stage with her closest friend and collaborator, her brother Finneas and sang “When the Party’s Over.”
Aerosmith hit the stage with “Living on the Edge,” then went into “Walk Like This” with Run DMC literally busting in and joining the party. Run DMC paid tribute to their late band member Jam Master Jay by using his logo as a backdrop.
Tyler the Creator brought his mom onstage with him to accept the award for Best Rap Album, and he thanked her and his supporters for believing in him through it all.
Lil Nas X performed “Old Town Road,” with BTS, Diplo, Mason Ramsey and Billy Ray Cyrus, and it was a bizarre, genre-bending and fabulous glitter bomb.
Everyone listened when Demi Lovato returned with a raw, but beautifully done “Anyone.”
DJ Khaled, Kirk Franklin, Roddy Ricch, John Legend and Meek Mill paid stirring tribute performing “Higher,” to the late Hussle, who won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance posthumously and Best Rap/Sung Performance. After the performance, they also hailed Kobe Bryant.
Flamenco darling Rosalia took the stage with a mesmerizing performance that put dancing center stage during “Juro Que.”
DJ Khaled and John Legend didn’t leave a dry eye in the house when accepting the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance for their late friend Hussle.
Gary Clark Jr. delivered a powerful “This Land,” after scoring Grammys for Best Contemporary Blues Album, Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song.
Eilish and Finneas accepted the award for Album of the Year, saying they were “confused and grateful.”

‘BAD BOYS FOR LIFE’ AND ‘1917’ SURGE PAST $100M – (01/27/2020)
Sony’s Bad Boys for Life, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and Universal–Amblin–New Republic’s Oscar-contender 1917 surged past the $100 million mark at the box office, becoming 2020’s first films to reach that landmark.
Bad Boys snagged $34 million this weekend, for a running haul of $120 million for its second weekend out, and 1917 grabbed $16 million, for a total of $104 million in its fifth week out.
The Robert Downey Jr.-toplined Doolittle, meanwhile, snagged a disappointing $11.3 million in its second week out, for a cume of $43.5 million, and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman brought in just $10 million in its opening weekend. The news was worse for The Turning, which earned a rare F from CinemaScore, and managed just $7.3 million at the B.O.
Three firearms related bills had public hearings this week. The House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held public hearings on Wednesday for HB1379 and HB1101. The NH Senate Judiciary Committee held a public hearing for SB469 on Thursday. The two House bills were considered by the legislature last year and vetoed by Governor Chris Sununu.
“Gun Show Loophole?”
Gun shows are a long-held event in the United States and happen weekly in New Hampshire. In most states private sales often don’t require background checks. It is, however, illegal to sell to someone who cannot own a firearm. This practice ensures that private sales are often done in the open and can be traced by paperwork if a gun ends up being used in a crime. The authorities will be able to follow the trail of the business who conducted the initial background check of the commercial sale to the private seller to the private buyer who bought the gun from them through bill of sale paperwork. If bill of sale paperwork doesn’t exist, the last person who is legally shown to have owned the firearm will have to explain why they didn’t report it missing or they may face charges. A person who sells a gun to someone who legally can’t have one may also face charges of their own.
HB1379 would essentially treat private sales made or arranged at New Hampshire gun shows as commercial, thus requiring background checks on them.
The law doesn’t change at gun shows. All commercial operators at the show still must run background checks on purchases. Private sales do not. Supporters of HB1379 say “gun shows” are of a commercial nature and therefore call the regular law a loophole for people who are privately selling arms at the show. Gun shows usually require proof of residency. Some gun shows will facilitate background checks for attendees. Some gun shows require purchasers to have a Pistol/Revolver License to make a purchase. While the license itself isn’t required in New Hampshire for concealed carry, it still exists because it secures extra benefits to citizens such as reciprocity to carry in some other states and being able to legally carry on school grounds which is illegal under Federal Law without a carry permit. The process of obtaining a Pistol/Revolver License involves a background check by the local police who issue the permit.
Opponents to HB1379 point out that requiring background checks means that private citizens who normally don’t operate commercially will have to get a commercial license to sell guns they don’t want anymore or that they will be at the mercy of private businesses which often charge fees to run a background check for them. According to the US Department of Justice the majority of guns used by criminals were either purchased off the black market or stolen. That same 2019 report cites 0.8% of prisoners say they obtained their firearm used during a crime from a gun show.
“Suicide Prevention”
Suicide is on the rise in New Hampshire. Advocates for the gun purchase waiting periods say that they may play a role in preventing crimes or passion or suicide by giving time for emotions to settle before someone does something rash.
HB1101 would impose a three-day waiting period on firearms purchases in the state.
The initial form of the bill last year involved a seven-day waiting period on both guns and ammunition in the state unless the purchaser took a state-required hunting course. It has since been amended to a shorter length of time and to only include firearms, not ammunition. Opponents to the legislation are skeptical of its impact and say that it creates an undo burden on individuals, especially those who fear for their safety or already own firearms. The Rand Corporation says data is inconclusive on the effectiveness of the laws at this time. Common ground is being found on this subject outside of legislation at this time, however.
“Gun Ranges: Loud and Dangerous?”
SB469 would allow prosecution of gun ranges for violating noise ordinances or for damages caused by range operation.
This bill would deal primarily with ranges that already exist. New ranges have to make allowances for town requirements regarding safety and noise, but if someone moves in next to a gun range that existed before they moved: they accepted that choice when they moved there under current law. Supporters of the bill want to enable local towns to impose more regulations and requirements on gun ranges that already exist. Opponents say this bill is largely designed to close down ranges by imposing impossible expenses or standards to keep up with.
