One year ago today, Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant and seven others died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. Kobe was 41 and Gianna was 13.  According to Lakers Daily,  the Lakers don’t have any plans for any large memorials, as they don’t want to place any further emphasis on what will already be a challenging day for Bryant’s family. Bryant’s family reportedly has asked NBA teams and the league not to hold tributes today (January 26th.) Instead, the team will reportedly continue to memorialize Kobe in subtle ways, such as by wearing Bryant’s signature sneakers and with Lebron James’ No. 24 finger sleeve.

Meanwhile, according to Revolt, LeBron spoke on Kobe’s death, saying, “It’s a saying that time heals all and as devastating and as tragic as it was and still is to all of us involved with it… it takes time. Everyone has their own grieving process.”

Kobe Bryant is considered one of the top NBA players of all time. He made 18 All Star teams during his 20 year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a first-round pick in the 1996 draft, winning five NBA championships,  two NBA Finals MVPs and he was the league MVP in 2008.

He was on 15 All-NBA Teams, 12 All-Defensive Teams and led the league in scoring for two seasons. He ranks fourth place in the NBA for all-time regular season scoring and all-time postseason scoring. He also represented the US in several Olympics appearances, where he helped secure gold medals twice.

Kobe is the only player in team history to have both of his jerseys, numbers 8 and 24 retired.

At age 34, Kobe became the youngest player in NBA history to surpass the 30,000 point mark.

Kobe left behind his wife Vanessa and his three daughters Natalia, Capri and Bianka.

Most of us have spent nearly a year sheltering in place, and as a result, many of us have ditched jeans for sweatpants. But psychologists believe that even when nobody else will see us, how we dress has the power to influence our mental health as well as our general productivity. And the actual impact of getting dressed up or down varies from person to person. Tracy Thomas is a psychologist and says putting effort into your appearance, even the tiniest bit, is “one of the most important things people can do for their emotional, mental, and psychological health.” She says daily grooming rituals are a sign of “celebrating life,” and says these little celebrations are especially important right now. Licensed clinical psychologist Sheva Assar adds, “If we’re wearing athleisure when working out, going to brunch, outside and when working, it could potentially impact our ability to transition into work mode when we’re wanting to focus on work. So what we’re wearing helps us in making those transitions.” The experts add that creative types in particular might feel the emotional benefits of their wardrobe more than non-creative people. The final piece of advice: pick clothing and grooming practices that make you feel the most confident and comfortable.

You may wonder if there’s really an optimal time to do a work out, and science seems to think there is. A study published in 2020 found a correlation between exercising between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and a reduction in the risk of certain types of cancer (but the study was small and cannot prove causation). Another study found that people were able to work out harder in the evening, while other studies suggest that afternoon and evenings are when your reaction time is at its quickest. But the take-home message here is that the benefits of working out are numerous, and so the best type of workout is one that you’ll do regularly. And note, if you’re trying to make it a habit, it helps to choose a timeslot that you’re likely to stick to every day.

After going missing while on a snowmobile, a Canadian teenager managed to survive by building a snow cave to stay in until he was found. The 17-year-old in British Columbia, who has not been named, built himself a snow cave in the backcountry to shelter in after being separated from his group, according to South Cariboo Search and Rescue. Friends and family began searching for the teen when he didn’t turn up in the parking lot at a designated time. South Cariboo SAR eventually located the teenager, finding him “in good condition.”
