U.K. GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN ON NETFLIX’S ‘THE CROWN’ – (12/16/2020)

The U.K. government is not relenting in its battle with Netflix, despite the streamer’s repeated denial of requests to clarify The Crown’s status as a drama. The Crown focuses on the lives of the Royal Family, but in the current season, its focus on modern events has made several members of the family uncomfortable, according to reports.

Season 4 covers events in Prince Charles’ courtship with and marriage to the late Princess Diana, mother of Princes Harry and William. It also covers his alleged affair with the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, whom he is now married to; while they did reportedly conduct an affair for part of Charles and Diana’s marriage, the show dramatizes and lengthens their relationship.

Since the show began airing, Camilla and Charles have come under so much fire on social media, they’ve turned off comments on their Twitter feed.

Culture minister John Whittingdale told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that it “does no harm” for Netflix to make explicit to subscribers that The Crown, although pegged to real events, is Peter Morgan’s “speculation or imagination as to what might have happened.”

Last month, culture secretary Oliver Dowden wrote to Netflix asking the streamer to warn viewers that the show is a work of fiction. Netflix denied the request, saying: “We have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.”

Whittingdale said: “These are events that are quite raw and controversial, and they involve people such as the existing Prince of Wales and his sons. It does no harm, particularly because those events did generate strong views and emotions on both sides. It is not unhelpful to remind people… that this is not based on any insider knowledge, but is a dramatization of somebody’s speculation or imagination as to what might have happened.”

He warned that if Netflix does not cooperate, there could be consequences: “UK traditional broadcasters are subject to quite stringent requirements… and then you have the video on demand services, which are really subject to no regulation or requirements at all. That is something that is quite a stark difference. Whether or not we would want to look at having some kind of basic requirements on the video on demand services is something which I think the government might well think about.”

SHAWN MENDES ADDRESSES RUMORS ABOUT HIS SEXUALITY – (12/15/2020)

Shawn Mendes discussed the “frustrating” rumors about his sexuality with Dax Shepard

The singer told Shepard that people have been calling him “gay” since he was 15-years-old and he has struggled with how to respond.

He told the Armchair Expert podcast,” You want to say, ‘I’m not gay but it’d be fine if I was gay. But also, there’s nothing wrong with being gay but I’m not.’ You don’t really know how to respond to the situation.”

The “Wonder” singer says his upbringing is likely responsible for his image.

He said, “I didn’t grow up wrestling. I grew up getting my hair braided on New Year’s Eve. It just completely depends on the way you grew up in your life and your surroundings.”

However, Mendes thinks it’s important that men be able to embrace their softer sides.

“I think people are really quick to just say, ‘Well, he’s an artist so he gets a pass to be vulnerable and a pass to cry but most men shouldn’t. Guys need to just be vulnerable. We need to cry. Stop thinking this is being brave and strong and start thinking is the opposite, actually.”

Mendes recently nabbed his fourth consecutive #1 album release with Wonder.

According to a press release, he joins Elvis Presley and Justin Bieber as the only male artists in the history of Billboard Top 200 to score four No. 1 albums by 22-year-old.

Wonder already has over 600 million global streams to add to Shawn’s more than 50 billion total combined career streams.

ELLEN DEGENERES TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID – (12/11/2020)

Ellen DeGeneres has tested positive for COVID-19, but is “feeling fine right now,” she announced Thursday. Production on her show has been suspended until January.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show host, 62, noted that “anyone who has been in close contact with me has been notified and I am following all proper CDC guidelines.”

“I’ll see you all again after the holidays,” she added. “Please stay healthy and safe.”

In October, her show became one of the first to welcome a limited number of in-studio audience members. Beginning October 28th 440 fans were allowed to attend tapings in person, with capacity for 300.

Her show, meanwhile, is reportedly struggling following reports of a toxic work environment. Sources told BuzzFeed news that advertisers and sponsors are shying away from the show, and that producers are struggling to get A-listers.

“In a typical year, ‘12 Days of Giveaways’ is huge. We’ve basically claimed Christmas on daytime TV. When you think of Christmas on TV, you think of The Ellen Show,” a current employee told BuzzFeed. “Everyone wants to be in the audience. Everyone wants the gifts. And so we line up all these crazy sponsors, and people love it. But this year, our ‘12 Days’ is more condensed. We don’t have as many sponsors.”

Celebs that have signed on have been largely virtual, though recent in-studio guests have included Leslie Odom, Jr. on Dec. 9, Bryan Cranston on Dec. 4, Diane Keaton on Dec. 3, Lil Nas X on Dec. 2, and Justin Bieber on Dec. 1.

GRAMMYS EXEC APOLOGIZES TO TIFFANY HADDISH – (12/11/2020)

Haddish, who was nominated for best comedy album, spoke out to Variety, saying she’d turned down the offer to host the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony

All of that would have to come out of my pocket,” she told Variety. “I don’t know if this might mean I might not get nominated ever again, but I think it’s disrespectful.”

“I was like, ‘The exposure is amazing but I think I have enough. I appreciate you guys asking. And as much as I appreciate the honor of being nominated, that’s not OK.” Haddish added.

Harvey Mason Jr., the interim president and CEO of the Recording Academy, posted a statement apologizing, saying that the offer was made by a talent booker without his knowledge.

“To me, that was wrong,” Mason said. “I’m frustrated by that decision. It was a lapse in judgement, it was in poor taste and it was disrespectful to the creative community. I’m part of the creative community. I know what that feels like, and it’s not right.”

Mason said he reached out to Haddish himself. “I apologized to her personally and I apologized to her from the academy, I expressed to her my regret and my displeasure about how this went down and about how this was handled,” Mason said. “Again, I want to say Tiffany, we are sorry and thank you for allowing me to speak on it.”

CHADWICK BOSEMAN SOBBED ON SET OF FINAL FILM, DIRECTOR REVEALS – (12/08/2020)

Chadwick Boseman managed to keep his cancer battle private before his death at age 43. But the star did have some rough moments in public, including one that the Tony-Award winning director of Boseman’s last film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, discussed with WSJ. Magazine. George C. Wolfe recalled how one moment seemed to touch a nerve with Boseman.

It came as the trumpet player Levee (Boseman) belittled Cutler (Colman Domingo) for being a man of faith.

“We were doing it in a very casual way, and I assumed that when Levee got to the big speech that Chadwick was going to stop. But he didn’t stop. He kept going, and Levee took over—it was raw and explosive,” remembered Wolfe. “Afterwards, Chadwick just started to sob, and Colman hugged him, and then Chadwick’s girlfriend basically picked him up.”

Boseman was dating Taylor Simone Ledward at the time, but they married before his death in August, four years after being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

Domingo also recalled how he could see something was happening with Boseman: “I could tell with Chad sometimes, he had something on his mind. He’d walk into a room and he wouldn’t speak to anyone.”

Domingo then jokingly confronted the actor, saying, “Oh, you’re just not going to say hi to anybody?” Domingo recalled Boseman smiling and then making it a point to shake his hand and give him a hug every day on set.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starts streaming on Netflix on Dec. 18.
