LIZZO TAKING BREAK FROM TWITTER DUE TO ‘TROLLS’ – (01/07/2020)

Lizzo is taking a break from Twitter.

The 31-year-old singer announced in a tweet Sunday that she is stepping away from the social media site due to “trolls.” “Yeah I can’t do this Twitter [expletive] no more.. too many trolls…” she wrote. “I’ll be back when I feel like it.”

Lizzo had clashed with a person in December who attributed her popularity to “an obesity epidemic in America.”

“I’m popular because I write good songs and I’m talented and perform high energy hour and a half shows filled with love,” Lizzo responded. “The only person who needs to do better is you.”

“Keep my name out ya mouth & look in the mirror before you come for me,” she added. “Here’s the attention you ordered.”

Lizzo is nominated for eight awards at the 2020 Grammys, including Album of the Year for Cuz I Love You, released in April. The album includes the singles “Juice” and “Tempo.”

They were hosted live by Ricky Gervais, his fifth time in the hot seat, from the Beverly Hilton, and aired on NBC. 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood emerged the big winners on the movie side with Best Director and Best Picture, and Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor respectively, but Joker performed well too, bringing home two awards.

Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor, Motion Picture, Drama for Joker, while Renee Zellweger won Best Actress, Motion Picture, Drama for Judy. Taron Egerton took home Best Actor, Musical or Comedy for his work in Rocketman, while Awkwafina won the award for Best Actress, Musical or Comedy for her role in The Farewell.

On the TV side, Succession won Best Drama, Fleabag won Best Musical or Comedy.

Going in, Netflix led in all nominations with 34, thanks to films like Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, with six and five nominations each. Both were shut out. On the TV side, The Crown and Unbelievable snagged four nods each for the streamer, with HBO’s Chernobyl also earning four.

HIGHLIGHTS

In his opening speech, Gervais acknowledged the backlash he got for some of his recent tweets, which many said were transphobic, joking that the hosts, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, could “barely speak English” and invited him “by fax.”

Gervais also slammed Cats, made fun of Scorsese’s height, roasted the lack of diversity among the nominees, and told awards-receivers to make their speeches quick, all while apparently drinking a beer at the podium and promising this would be the “last time” he’d ever host.

Here’s what he said about Hollywood at large: “If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent. If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world…”

Russell Crowe’s acceptance speech, delivered by presenter Jennifer Aniston because he stayed in Australia with his family to help protect them from wildfires, issues a stark call for a switch to renewable energy, saying that the wildfires were caused by climate change.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Meher Tatna acknowledges that they can do better in promoting more diversity and inclusion.

In her acceptance speech for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy, Fleabag actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge gave full credit to her co-star Andrew Scott, despite the fact that he was snubbed in his category.

Kate McKinnon gave a heartfelt speech honoring Ellen DeGeneres for her bravery, fearlessness and fabulous collared shirts as she prepared to give her the Carol Burnett Award.

While accepting the the Carol Burnett Award, DeGeneres jokingly holds the crowd hostage with a long speech that traces her entire life span, including a faux husband and children. (She is married to Portia de Rossi).

Quentin Tarantino gave actress Margot Robbie a shout-out for bringing more “goodness” to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood than any other film he’d been involved in. He also thanked his wife, who is pregnant with their first child.

Waller-Bridge thanks former President Obama for being a fan while accepting the award for Best Television Show, letting viewers know that he is “on her list.”

During her acceptance speech for Best Performance by an Actress in a Series, Patricia Arquette slammed President Trump’s policies against Iran and his threats to bomb cultural sites on Twitter.

While accepting her award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama, Olivia Colman admits she’s actually kind of drunk. “Stumped,” she says, confessing she never thought she’d win.

Tom Hanks tears up thanking his wife Rita Wilson and five kids while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Sam Mendes accepts the award for Best Director, and says he and every other director stand in the shadow of Scorsese.

Michelle Williams gives a shout-out to a woman’s right to choose, saying she is grateful she could choose “when to have my children and with whom.”

While accepting the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt jokes that he wanted to bring his mom but he was afraid he’d be accused of dating her and that would be “awkward.” He also roasts Leonardo “LDC” DiCaprio, saying “I would have shared the raft,” a reference to the Titanic.

Joaquin Phoenix thanks the HFPA for serving plant-based meals. This was the first Golden Globes ceremony that went meat-free. He also shared expletive-laden advice for fellow celebs about private jets, personal choices and the current challenges the world is facing.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is confirming the rumors that a transgender character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be unveiled soon.

When asked by a student at the New York Film Academy about the future of a transgender character, he said: “Yes, absolutely yes. Very soon. In a movie we’re shooting right now.”

He did not specify which movie would include the character or when it would be released. Feige underlined Marvel and Disney’s push for diversity and inclusion, pointing out that two movies set for release this year were directed by women, and adding that several new shows on Disney+ are helmed by women.

“We have three other shows we’ve announced, we haven’t announced the players yet, but spoiler alert — two out of three of them are women,” Feige said.

“It makes for better stories. I say, when you are sitting at a table and everyone looks like you, you’re in trouble. You aren’t going to get the best story out of that.”

When news broke on Twitter, several Marvel stars, including Mark Ruffalo, celebrated. He wrote: “Go Marvel!”

IMAGINE DRAGONS FRONTMAN LAUGHS OFF CHART CRITICISM – (01/02/2020)

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds has laughed off concerns over the band taking the top three spots on Billboard‘s Top Rock Songs of the Decade chart. The songs were “Thunder,” “Believer” and “Radioactive,” and the Internet lit up with debates over whether the tracks deserved to be considered rock at all.

Reynolds addressed all this on Monday (December 30th), writing, “got on twitter to find all the slander and all the love. thank you for the love and yea I’d probably be mad if it wasn’t my band but it is my band hahahahahahbaba.”

The singer continued, “in all serious. thank you so much. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to have spent the last decade writing this music and sharing it w you. it all comes from a real place and it always will. the world can debate what genre it belongs in. that’s not my concern.”

The Billboard list also includes tracks from Twenty One Pilots, the Lumineers, Portugal. The Man and Panic! At The Disco.

Reynolds told us that Imagine Dragons took its time to get its sound right before releasing its debut album in 2012: [“The last thing that we wanted to do was to put out our first album when we didn’t understand exactly who we were as a band. We needed that time and that development to really find who Imagine Dragons was and to have a unique sound that was ours, and a message that, you know, we felt was worth saying before we tried to show it to the public and have them understand it.”]

THE TOP-EARNING MUSICIANS OF THE DECADE – (12/26/2019)

Forbes has released a list of the top-earning musicians of the last 10 years, and legendary producer-rapper Dr. Dre is sitting comfortably at No. 1. Since 2010, Dre has reportedly earned a cool $950 million, putting him ahead of the likes of Taylor Swift (at No. 2 with $825 million), Beyoncé (who is No. 3 with $685 million) and more.

The earnings weren’t really from music – considering Dre only released one album in that time frame (2015’s Compton) and as Forbes noted, he hasn’t produced on a No. 1 record since Eminem’s “Crack a Bottle” in 2009. Instead, a majority of Dre’s earnings came from his approximately 20% stake in Beats. The $3 billion Apple acquisition of the company in 2014 helped out as well.

Following Dre in the No. 2 spot is Swift, who decade’s worth of albums, partnerships and touring earned her a whopping $825 million, according to Forbes, and she was 2019’s highest-paid celebrity.

Next in line is Beyoncé, whose $685 million estimate is a bit above her husband, JAY-Z, who sits at the No. 7 spot with $560 million.

The ranking doesn’t include earnings among the estates of deceased artists, but Forbes notes that if postmortem profits were accounted for, Michael Jackson would easily outdo everyone alive with a figure of $2.37 billion.

Forbes’ full top 10 earners list:

  1. Dr. Dre – $950 million
  2. Taylor Swift – $825 million
  3. Beyoncé – $685 million
  4. U2 – $675 million
  5. Diddy – $605 million
  6. Elton John – $565 million
  7. Jay-Z – $560 million
  8. Paul McCartney – $535 million
  9. Katy Perry – $530 million
  10. Lady Gaga – $500 million

ARIANA GRANDE, KATY PERRY AND MORE GIVE MARIAH CAREY THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER – (12/24/2019)

Mariah Carey’s 1994 hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” celebrated its 25th anniversary with its first No. 1 placement on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

To commemorate the iconic single’s big day, a slew of stars – including Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Jennifer Hudson, Kim Kardashian, Trevor Noah, Kerry Washington, James Corden and more – participated in a video to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the song. The clip kicks off with an introduction from Tyler Perry, after which all the celebs take turns lip syncing along to the track.

“WOW! This is one of the best Christmas gifts I could ever have gotten,” Mariah tweeted after seeing the clip. “I am so thankful to all of my friends and favorite artists who participated in this video. You brought a huge smile to my face. THANK YOU!”

The video also features appearances by Mariah’s twins, Moroccan and Monroe, as well as her boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” just logged its second week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It first hit No. 1 last week, making it the first holiday song to top that chart in 60 years.

Meanwhile, at No. 2 on the Hot 100 this week is Brenda Lee’s Christmas classic, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” This marks the first time that the No. 1 and No. 2 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 are both Christmas hits.

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was originally released in 1958 but first charted in 1960. Last week, when it rose to No. 3, it set a record for the longest climb into the top five: 59 years and nine days. Lee recorded her hit version when she was just 13-years-old, in 1958. She turned 75 on December 12th.

In addition to those two holiday hits, there are two other classic songs in the Top 10: Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” at No. 6, and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” at No. 9.

The tour finale was an emotional one for Grande. The singer, 26, was recorded by fans bursting into tears as she gave a farewell address to fans. “This would not have gone the way it did without you and I love you so much,” she said. “Thank you for traveling around the world to see me. I know some of you guys flew all over the (expletive) place to see me. Like, what? Why? What? Thank you. And why? I love you. This has been amazing. Thank you so much.”

Grande also thanked her crew backstage. “It just takes so many people to do something like this and I’m really grateful to everyone involved and everyone here,” Grande said. “You guys have become family… It’s a lot to be away from your home and your family for this long and no one ever has a bad (expletive) attitude.”

Grande’s manager, Scooter Braun, met her backstage after the show to give her a hug. The music exec wrote a lengthy Instagram post Sunday congratulating the pop star and crediting her with the idea to put out a live album.

“You did it. I know all the hard nights. I know all the pain and the struggle. I remember all our talks and I also know it was Your decision and Your strength that got you through it,” Braun wrote. “You are exactly who you claim to be. You not only did it… you found your joy again with the fans night after night. You found your joy in your family and friends. You found your joy in your music. And in turn you brought us all.. millions of us.. joy. Proud is not the word for what I feel. This is more than that.”

Grande is nominated for five awards at the 2020 Grammys, including Album of the Year for Thank U, Next, which includes the hit singles “Thank U, Next,” “7 Rings” and “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.”

DEMI LOVATO SPLITS WITH AUSTIN WILSON JUST BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS: Demi Lovato and model Austin Wilson have split up just before the Christmas holiday. While replying to a fan on social media, the 27-year-old singer confirmed that she and Austin were no longer together and asked fans to “not go after” him with mean comments. “Please don’t go after him. He’s a good guy. Much better than what people see on the outside just because he’s got a lot of tattoos,” Demi wrote. She added, “Breakups are hard for both parties involved. Just stay nice and say prayers.” Just last month, Demi and Austin made their relationship Instagram official with two cute pics. Wilson was Lovato’s first public romance since her 2018 apparent drug overdose and subsequent rehab stint. She has since been hard at work on a new album and taking on a recurring guest role on Will & Grace.

BEHIND THE CHANNING TATUM AND JESSIE J SPLIT – (12/24/2019)

Channing Tatum and Jessie J’s romance was doomed due to bad timing, People reports. A source spills: “He is super busy with his career and as a dad. He has a world awaiting him and is trying to manage how busy he is which isn’t easy.”

The pair got together in October of 2018 after Tatum split from ex-wife Jennie Dewan, with whom he shares Everly

“He has a lot on his plate right now and wants to be the best dad possible which means he needs to be around when he isn’t traveling for his own work,” says the source.

J recently admitted that because they were connected in the press before their romance had really gotten off the ground, it added extra pressure. She told U.K.’s The Times: “Chan and I got photographed before our relationship was even a thing and that created such pressure.”
