ARIANA GRANDE BECOMES MOST SUBSCRIBED FEMALE ARTIST ON YOUTUBE; FANS START #BOYCOTT7RINGS MOVEMENT – (02/14/2019)
Please note the following story contains language that could be considered offensive.
Fresh off her first Grammy win over the weekend, Ariana Grande has reached yet another milestone: She is now the most subscribed female artist on YouTube.
Ariana has over 32.5 million subscribers, surpassing both Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Taylor has 32.38 million subscribers, while Katy as 32.24 million. Ariana’s new record-breaking status is thanks in large part to some of her most recent attention-grabbing music videos. Her latest video for “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored,” earned 21.9 million views in 24 hours last week, making it the second biggest debut of 2019. The first is Ariana’s video for “7 Rings.”
Meanwhile, Ariana’s fans are determined to give the singer back her third No. 1 – by dethroning “7 Rings.” They have teamed up to #Boycott7Rings, and instead turn their streams over to thank u, next’s latest standout, “break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored.”
In the midst of all the tweets, Ari hopped in on the fun. “y’all are so insane and funny and i love u,” she wrote. “nothings funnier than ‘boycott seven rings’….. i can’t lmao. whatever’s meant to be will be, babies i ain’t goin nowhere.”
After a bunch of fans asked Grande to use the hashtag herself, she finally caved. “r u happy now,” she asked in a since deleted tweet. “7 Rings” is currently at its third week atop the Billboard Hot 100, her second No. 1 following “Thank U, Next,” which debuted atop the chart dated November 17th, and led for seven total weeks.
Speaking of the song “Thank u, Next,” turns out it was almost a very different song – or three
In a recent interview radio interview, Ariana opens up about why she almost didn’t release the iconic version of the track, largely due to her tumultuous relationship with her former fiancé, Pete Davidson.
She said, “In my relationship by the time things were, like, up and down and on and off and so I didn’t know what was gonna happen. And then we got back together and so I had to make a different version of it. And then we broke up again and so we ended up going with that version. There’s a version where I was getting married. There’s a version where I’m not getting married. There’s a version with nothing, we’re not talking about anything. But we all knew the first version was gonna be the version we ultimately went with.”
Once the track was finished, Grande said it was hard playing it for people because she “knew that as soon as people heard the names they were gonna be like, ‘Run that back one more time. What the f**k is she doing? Like, what the f**k is she doing’?” Despite that initial fear, Grande revealed that “everyone that I’m still in touch with has been very supportive of it.”
