‘MIDWAY’ TOPS B.O. WITH $17.5M – (11/11/2019)

The top movie at the box office this weekend is Lionsgate’s Midway with $17.5 million in receipts. Roland Emmerich’s $70 million – $100 million World War II action flick hit theaters with mixed reviews, and the biggest star is Nick Jonas, though Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans were also featured.

Still, the film topped Warner Bros.’ Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, which was expected to scoop up the top slot. The sequel to 1980’s The Shining debuted at No. 2 with $14.1 million, about half of what was expected. The critical reaction (73% on Rotten Tomatoes vs. Midway’s 41%) was more positive, but thus far, that hasn’t proved to be a winning draw.

“Roland Emmerich is a visionary filmmaker, and audiences loved the movie,” said David Spitz, Lionsgate’s president of domestic distribution. “What’s really terrific about the results is it sets us up to play throughout the holidays, knowing that the older demo doesn’t rush out.”

Meanwhile, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is nearing the $1 billion mark at the box office, making it the most profitable comic book film ever released.
