‘SPIDER-MAN’ OWNS B.O. WITH RECORD-BUSTING $185M – (07/08/2019)

Sequels and franchises have been slumping this year, but Sony’s Spider-Man broke that pattern this weekend with Far From Home, starring Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal and Zendaya. Meanwhile, A24’s Midsommar delivered their best opener this year, landing just below the weekend top five list.

Far From Home topped the box office this weekend, entering the weekend with $91 million already in its coffers, and scooping up an additional $93.6 million for a total haul of $185 million over the long holiday. Far From Home take gauged the largest six-day opener for a Tuesday start and 22nd largest six-day opener of all time. The film is also popular with both critics, who gave it an “A” on CinemaScore and 8.1/10 IMDB user rating.

Disney’s Toy Story 4 moved to second place, bringing in an estimated $34.4 million, for a total domestic haul of $300 million. The House of Mouse’s Aladdin crossed the $900 million mark globally.
