‘ALADDIN’ CONJURES UP $112M OPENER – (05/27/2019)
Aladdin zipped into Memorial Day with an opening of $112.7 million over the long weekend, the fifth best Memorial Day weekend debut ever, ahead of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Aladdin is Disney’s second best opener behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End ($139.8M). It’s a record for director Guy Ritchie and star Will Smith’s second behind Suicide Squad ($133.6M).
“We’re delighted,” said Cathleen Taff, Disney’s president of theatrical distribution. “Between the fun action-adventure and spectacular music combined with the cast, which is so charming and has such great chemistry together, we’ve hit something that fans are embracing and walking out of wanting to share with others.”
The James Gunn-produced Booksmart and horror Brightburn, meanwhile, tanked, bringing in $6.5 million and $7.5 million respectively for their openers.
John Wick: Chapter 3 came in second at the B.O. with $24.4 million in its second week out, while Avengers: Endgame took third at $16.8 million.
