‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ ROCKS BOX OFFICE – (11/05/2018)

A biopic about rock n’ roller Freddie Mercury and his band Queen dominated the box office on opening weekend, bringing in about $50M. It was a good haul for the Rami Malek-headliner, which got mixed reviews, especially as it was up against Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

The live-action rendering of the classic tale about a young girl is transported to a magical world of gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice from the House of Mouse nabbed about $20 million, putting it in second place.

The forecast for Nutcracker isn’t great; the film was reportedly made for $100M+, and the reviews are generally pretty negative. Observers say the strong cast (including Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley) may carry it.

Nobody’s Fool from Paramount Pictures landed in third place with $14 million.

‘HALLOWEEN’ SPOOKS COMPETITION AS ‘LONDON FIELDS’ TANKS – (10/29/2018)

Halloween maintained its top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Universal and Blumhouse’s Jamie Lee Curtis-starring slasher picked up $32 million this weekend, a drop of 58% since its debut.

The David Gordon-helmed Halloween crossed the all-important $100 million mark Friday. Worldwide, the film has nabbed $172 million.

The much-delayed star-studded (Amber Heard, Billy Bob Thornton, Jim Sturgess, Theo James, Cara Delevingne, with a cameo featuring Heard’s ex Johnny Depp) London Fields opened to $160,000, the second-worst opening for a wide release, behind 2008’s Proud American. The adaptation of the Martin Amis novel of the same name was set to premiere in 2015, but was pulled over a legal dispute.

Meanwhile, A Star Is Born and Venom maintained their slots in the top five, with $14 million and $10.8 million respectively.
