Feel Good Story of the Week: Elderly Man Goes to Beauty School to Learn To Do His Wife’s Hair
A devoted 79-year-old husband visited a Canadian beauty school last month to get lessons to help his wife, who can no longer get ready by herself. The man walked into Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics in Alberta on April 22nd and told director Carrie Hannah that he wanted to learn how to use the curling wand. His wife’s vision was failing and she kept burning herself as a result, so he wanted some tips. The man, who wants to remain anonymous, was paired with a student and mannequin and was taught how to operate the curling wand and protect his wife’s skin. The couple have both visited the school since to express their gratitude.

Injured Hiker Carried Off Carter-Moriah Trail in Shelburne
Shelburne – Fish & Game Conservation Officers and volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search & Rescue (AVSAR), and Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO) responded to a report of an injured hiker approximately 3 miles up the Carter-Moriah Trail in Shelburne Saturday afternoon around 2:00 p.m.
The hiker, identified as Donald Devost, 48, of Berwick, ME, was descending after summiting Mt. Moriah when he slipped a steep, granite slab on the trail and suffered an injury to his lower leg. In pain and unable to bear any weight on that leg, Devost made a call to 911 requesting help.
Responding rescue personnel, including a class of Wilderness First Responder students from SOLO out of the Conway area, hiked in from the trailhead off Bangor Street in Gorham. Initial first responders on scene treated the injured leg and placed Devost into a litter and started carrying him down a mile of trail to an awaiting ATV. Devost was then taken from the litter and placed on the ATV and driven down nearly 2 miles to the trailhead. The rescue crew arrived at the trailhead at 6:45 p.m. From there Devost was transported to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin for further treatment of his injury.

Demon Slayer lost to Mortal Kombat when both opened last weekend, but the anime action adventure surged past Mortal Kombat this weekend.
Demon Slayer took in $6.4 million, while Mortal Kombat earned $6.2 million. Godzilla vs. Kong trailed at third with $2.74 million.

Finalists have been announced for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards and The Weeknd leads with 16 nominations. DaBaby came in 2nd with 11 nods.
Pop Smoke has 10. He, along with Juice WRLD received multiple honors, marking the first time in a decade that two of the top ten finalists received posthumous recognition.
Leading the way for women, Gabby Barrett is a first-time finalist and achieved nods in 9 categories and Megan Thee Stallion received the second-most female nods this year with 7.
The Billboard Music Awards will broadcast live from Los Angeles on May 23, on NBC.

93rd Annual Academy Awards – RECAP – 04/26/2021
Nomadland won Best Picture at the Oscars last night (4-25) during the 93rd Academy Awards show.
Frances McDormand, who also starred in the film, won Best Actress. Praised and nominated for its cinematography, she asked that people – please watch the movie on a big screen. She also let out a howl at the end of her speech, in respect to Michael Wolf Snyder, the movie’s sound mixer who recently committed suicide. The film celebrated three awards in all, including Chloe Zhao’s win for Best Directing.
The film, Mank won for Best Cinematography.
As for Best Actor, Joaquin Phoenix opened the envelope and announced Anthony Hopkins as the winner for his role in The Father. Hopkins did not attend the event. At 83, he now becomes the oldest-ever acting Oscar winner.
What is sure to be the viral moment of the evening was when Glenn Close stood up to dance to “Da Butt” by E.U., a song from Spike Lee’s film, School Daze.
The show started with Regina King, the One Night in Miami director, strutting down the red carpet and onto the stage to get the show going. She explained how everyone in the audience was vaccinated and tested and that the show would run like a movie… “When the cameras were on, the masks would be off and when the cameras were off, the masks would be on.”
The ceremony was held at Union Station in Los Angeles and The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Some winners accepted from other locations.

Box Office Recap – 04/26/2021
Moviegoing is on the rebound, with Demon Slayer being taken out by Mortal Kombat, which raked in $22.5M to Demon’s $19.5M over the weekend. This was the biggest B.O. weekend since mid-March, when COVID started shutting down theaters.
Godzilla vs. Kong came in third, with $4.2M in its fourth week out.

Spring in NH Brings Blue Skies, Warmer Temperatures – and Wildfire Season
Governor Chris Sununu has proclaimed April 18-24 “Wildfire Awareness Week,” part of an effort to raise the level of public consciousness about the dangers of wildfire and its impact not only on New Hampshire’s forested landscape, but also the potential impact to homes, personal property and the state’s wide variety of recreational opportunities.
Unlike other parts of the country that experience their annual increase in wildfire activity in the summer and fall, spring is wildfire season in the northeastern portion of the United States, when dry grasses, leaves and pinecones, along with fallen twigs and branches, serve as potential fuel for a wildfire.
Limited precipitation received within the past week has not significantly improved the ongoing drought conditions in New Hampshire. More than 57 percent of the state is now experiencing moderate drought conditions and the remainder of the state is classified as abnormally dry.
The heightened concern for wildfires will continue until adequate precipitation is received allowing new leaves and green vegetation to emerge.
“As we transition from winter to spring, it’s important that everyone be aware that their change in activities may alter the causes of wildfires, but not the risk,” said Capt. Douglas Miner from the N.H. Forest Protection Bureau. “Being vigilant about what we are doing outdoors – whether disposing of ash from a woodstove, having that first cookout of the season or doing something else that involves combustion – and practicing strong wildfire prevention behavior can have an enormous impact on all of us.”
Ninety percent of wildfires in New Hampshire are caused by human behavior. While brush fires and campfires are common causes, other sources include improper disposal of smoking materials, overheated engines and sparks emitted from machinery.
“New Hampshire’s forests experienced a significant increase in visitors in 2020, and overall that’s great for our health and our economy,” said Patrick Hackley, director of the N.H. Division of Forests and Lands. “Unfortunately, not everyone understands how their actions might start a wildfire and cause damage to our landscape. This proclamation serves to highlight the importance of wildfire prevention awareness.”
The state’s Forest Protection Bureau, part of the N.H. Division of Forests and Lands, is responsible for protecting 4.5 million acres of both public and private New Hampshire forestlands from the threat of wildland fire and crimes against the forest resource. This is accomplished by forest rangers, fire patrolmen, fire tower personnel and support staff as well as the forest fire wardens and deputy wardens serving in each community.
From 2016-2020, New Hampshire experienced an average of 119 wildfires impacting 276 acres annually.

Forest Protection Bureau is part of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ Division of Forests and Lands, which protects and promotes the value provided by trees, forests and natural communities. Feel Good Story of the Week: Nursing Student Leaves Paintings Around Boston
Boston resident Jake Garcia has only been painting for five months, but his art is already becoming a collector’s item. Garcia is a nursing student at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services who recently discovered a love for painting. He’s started leaving several of his original paintings in spots around Boston, letting his Twitter followers know where they can look for his latest pieces. He hopes that he also inspires people to pick up their own paintbrushes.

SAU 9 & SAU 13 are Collecting Food to End 68 Hours of Hunger
Today on The Magic Morning Show, Gino was joined by Mandy McDonald of End 68 Hours of Hunger. She told us all about this MASSIVE School Food Drive that has been assembled by the faculty, staff, and students of SAU 9 and SAU 13. The school district’s have been collecting specific types of food for the cause and depending on where your student goes they can donate food as well. The Food Drive ends on Friday, April 23rd.
